pgk Posted July 28, 2012 Share #21 Posted July 28, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jacob's website is still active, you can still put stuff in the basket, etc. Have they actually ceased trading???
Advertisement Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Hi pgk, Take a look here Lost £6650, just because Jacobs Digital entered administration?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ayewing Posted July 28, 2012 Share #22 Posted July 28, 2012 There is a bit of fine print at the bottom of the Jacobs webpage stating that the administrators are running the business and that payment for any orders placed during the period of administration will be refunded if the order cannot be fulfilled. This is of no comfort to those who paid upfront before Jacobs went into administration.
Guest Posted July 28, 2012 Share #23 Posted July 28, 2012 Okay, Mod's can give me a hard time. But..... good though they are I will not pay Robert White in full for anything on back order with no delivery date. Given smaller dealers will still get stock your local dealer is more likely to supply than a large outlet. Indeed a good friend decided he wanted a 35 Summilux ASPH.FLE and a well regarded London dealer supplied in a matter of weeks What has it got to do with the mods where a member of the forum buys equipment. The dealer you mention can be very good and holds stock of some of the harder to find filters etc but paying 100% up front is a non starter. marknorton Posted July 29, 2012 Share #24 Posted July 29, 2012 I can certainly understand paying in full up front to jump the queue but to do so SO far in advance of the item being available is questionable. My dealer gets so many people registering interest and placing deposits and then not completing the purchase that paying in full for a committed purchase speaks volumes. The last 3 Leica items I have bought - M9-P, Chrome 50mm Summilux and 35mm Summilux FLE - were much easier to obtain by paying in full up front. I do take your point Mark .But my regular dealer is fully aware that if his delivery is poor or just not happening he will cease to be my regular dealer.Loyalty is a two way trip . archi4 Posted July 29, 2012 Share #26 Posted July 29, 2012 I definitely will not pay a large deposit. My regular dealers all know I never renege and always take delivery no matter what. And to any requests for a deposit up front my reply is "I already have a bank"
jaapv Posted July 29, 2012 Share #27 Posted July 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) There is a bit of a misunderstanding here I think. The dealer is not doing us a favor by selling a camera to us, we are doing him a favor by buying it with him. Demanding a full deposit, or even a part-deposit on easily redirected goods is reversing that relationship.
gyoung Posted July 29, 2012 Share #28 Posted July 29, 2012 And in the unlikely event of my buying such an expensive item, it would not be from a dealer who allows customers to bribe their way to the top of the queue Gerry

IkarusJohn Posted July 30, 2012 Share #31 Posted July 30, 2012 Never had to pay a deposit, and I'm not about to start. One local dealer told me I'd have to pay a full price deposit for a Noct, another got me one on short order, no deposit at all - luck of the draw, I guess. Demand for a deposit gets me out the door more quickly than a helpful assistant gets up bill's nose!

isp056 Posted August 20, 2012 Author Share #33 Posted August 20, 2012 Thanks for everyone's helpful reply and kind thought. I finally found the way out through the chargeback scheme. Hopefully the claim process goes as smoothly as possible. If so, I'll donate £200 to The Water Project for helping African people having clean water. Wish me luck:p;)
MichaelRabern Posted August 21, 2012 Share #34 Posted August 21, 2012 It might just work if you lodge a fraud complaint. After all they took your money knowing full well they could not deliver within a reasonable span of time. It won't get you your money back, but it might hamper the administrator, who may wish to offer you an incentive to withdraw the complaint. Agree. colonel Posted August 21, 2012 Share #36 Posted August 21, 2012 Lets not pillar the OP here I admit to being guilty I paid in full to Selfridges for a D800E, which I got in about a month as they only had a few people on the waiting list at the time I did: 1. Use AMEX which has one of/if not the best customer service policies 2. Check the latest financial statement of the group (geek) The service was impeccable and I would buy from them again. Would I have done this from a lesser vendor, probably not. Especially a camera only vendor based on the fierce competition in the UK and frequent withdrawls from the market I could see how someone would have thought Jacobs established though
