Different IR filtering and color handling. Having said that, the M9 files are maybe more fiddly (they are!) but it is possible to get excellent B&W there as well.

Excellent, but never as the M8....

Does this quality "advantage" of the M8 apply to both, jpg and dng?

Being somehow inspired by the MM, I am about to start B&W fotography with my M8 and wonder whether I make a mstake by using jpg.

Thanks

Klaus

Lucky man, especially the last one...

I would say yes and yes.

Yes, the B&W jpgs are very good and much better than the coloured jpgs out of camera.

Yes you make something wrong by using just jpg. Storage isn't that expensive anymore so make dng and jpgs BW in the same time and you will have a very good picture on the screen and all quality the camera can give.

If you want to use colour filters like yellow/green or orange, you have to play with the white balance. In my experience you get quite good results by taking daylight or cloudy with that filter.

hi, what makes the M8 b&w files so good ? better than m9 ?

hummm I had the M8 for ages and the M9 since the day it came out.

I have the impression that the M9 files are bit more fiddly and require a bit more work - but you can achieve what you had with the M8, specially in monochrome.

I found the M9 files a tad more dynamic range and with a bit more room to "play with".

Also, quite important is the lens : I find that some M lenses drop gorgeous files to play in monochrome - for example 28 F2ASHP and 24 2.8 ASPH, the contrast is superb.

YMMV.
