Hello,

Is there anyone here from Melborne? I am wondering how much has changed in the last 5 years (heading back next week for the first time since 2001).

In particular: is Kodak 400 CN readily available? And what was the name of the profi lab in Carlton I used to use? My memory has completey failed me, I can't even remember the name of the street. It's somewhere between Swanston and Lygon Street, quite close to the Canada Pub (Swanston Street) which used to sell crown lager for 2 dollars...

Thanks for any tips.

Cheers,

Andrew

G'day Andrew,

Well, 5 years on nowhere is the same! But this is still a great place to be. Maybe you were thinking of Vanbars for processing in Carlton on, now what was the name of that street?;)

Crown Lager @ $2 / bottle. Bad bargain. Better beers are to be had :D

Welcome back to Oz when you get here.

Oh, yes, the Kodak 400CN. Never used it, but I am sure Vanbars will have it.

Hello Andrew.

Welcome Back.

Quite a few changes in Melbourne since you where here.

Vanbars also have a lab in North Melbourne as well as Carlton.

Prism on where I get my stuff devolped are in North Melbourne.

For anything Leica. The Camera exchange in Lonsdale street is a great place to meet and buy.

Check out the new rail Station ( Southern Cross) and the docklands.

Erl, you're probablay right about Crown Lager, but it seemed a good accompagniment to the XXL schnitzel they used to have on offer:D

Vanbar! Yes that's the one. Thanks.

Ken, I will almost certainly be using the new station, looking forward to having a look.

Cheers,

Andrew

And have a look at all the Leica goodies in the museum at michaels camera - video - digital - Michaels Camera Museum which I discovered while there on holiday last November. Although they had nothing interestin (Leicawise) to sell in the shop!

Still, it must give a buzz to the city ?

Bruno

Literally - you can hear it for miles.

Skip the Crownies and try a Little Creatures or some Holgate Brewery if you can find it.

PM me if you would like some restaurant recommendations - there has definitely been some developments on that front in the last five years!

You can probably buy any film you want in Melbourne, but be prepared to pay for the privilege - the last roll of slide film I bought there was just under A$20 which I found to be quite a shock after Hong Kong where it is less than half that.

I am sure that you will have a great time. Enjoy!

G.

  • 4 weeks later...

Yes Andrew, Erl is right - you can still buy 400CN here; we still speak English and now our telephones can dial overseas! :) :)

XP2 is also readily available. Most of the camera stores in Elizabeth St in the heart of Melbourne seem to still stock c41 B&W film.

I think the reference to "GP" was Formula 1 Grand Prix. The recommendation of The Camera Exchange in Lonsdale St. is an excellent one should you need something Leica while in Melbourne. And it's fair to say if you need almost anything except film, The Camera Exchange is the place to start.

Not much has changed. Still no Melbourne based clubs looking like Premiership contenders.

Virtually down to 20% water in the reservoirs.

Sporting events still completely over the top.

I use Photo Production House in High Street Prahran. A totally dedicated Leica dealer.

Regards,

Paul.
