Another M8 Lens Question....

I have a 24mm Elmarit 2.8 ASPH lens, amongst others..., and find it a bit too wide if that''s possible. I would like to get the 28/35/50 mm Tri-Elmar as a good range walkaround lens but can't get it anywhere here in Singapore. I thought that I would sell the 24mm Elmarit and try the 28 mm Summicron f/2. The guy I always buy from says he would "love" my business but a) would be losing money on selling a virtually new lens and B) the difference between the 24 and 28 is not so great. Just zoom and crop what you want he says.

Any comments would be much appreciated....thanks.

I'm of a mind that if a particular focal length is consistently wrong for what you're trying to achieve, you need a different lens. You could crop out the extra field of view on your 24, just like your dealer suggests, but you'd be ceding a bit of quality every time you do.

The 28 Cron is a superlative lens. If your 24 is just a bit too wide, the 28 would probably suit you just fine.

Not sure what your dealer means by losing money on a nearly new lens, unless the inference is that you'd be selling your 24 to him, in which case he may very well have a point.

Best of luck, in any case.

Before you give up on the 24, try to find an external viewfinder. The M8's viewfinder gets pretty cramped when shooting with the 24, and with the inner portion blocked by the lens and its shade you may be responding to that feeling. Seeing a whole clear frame could make a difference.

The dealers in HK have the TriElmar. The 24 is a great street lense. Every city/space has an optimal size. In the case of Singapore I think its a 35 owing to all the wide open space (big streets etc). But in HK or Shanghai (more cramped) the 24 is better on the street.

Mmmhh, I dont know if I would like to give up the 24mm but I have recently purchased the Tri-Elmar and the lens sits on my M8 a lot.

It does not show the total clearness and IQ of the primes but still is a great lens and the slightly lower contrast sometimes helps in contrasty light.

I have many lenses. The combination 15CV+Tri-Elmar + eventually one fast prime (35/1.4?)

cheers, Tom
