Memory Card or Sensor issue??? (digilux 2)

Hi,

I just received a digilux 2 in the post today and there is a problem with it. It looks like the sensor needs replacing. Here's an image of the display from the lcd

However, I currently can not find a SDSC card at home so have yet to try it with a memory card in. I have already contacted leica via phone about the issue and was told it sounded like the sensor has given up but they also said just to try it with a card just in case.

Is someone able to confirm whether this is the sensor from the image shown? I need to contact the seller and may not be able to find/buy a smaller card in the next few days.

Thanks.

Jack

Thanks for the fast response.

I hope it is just the lack of card but the thing which has got me worried is that it is not just a pure blank screen, there is a white band across the top and occasionally a few flickers of static lines along the bottom.

I also forgot to mention in the initial post that when I contacted leica they confirmed that it has not had a replacement sensor so far.

Yes - but the standard sensor failure is a pink explosion on an image. It may well be that this sensor is dying, but still I would try a card first if I were you.

Anyway, it is no big deal as Leica replaces sensors as a courtesy service.

It's a bit difficult to say; however:

It looks more like an issue of the display than anything else. I have no other explanation for the ragged edge of the white band. What does the image look like in the view finder? In order to switch from the LCD to the viewfinder, press the EVF/LCD button once.

Do as Jaap suggested: buy yourself an SD card, take a few pictures of nice brick walls or some such and - most importantly - look at the pictures with a computer.

Afterthought: What is the camera displaying, anyway? It does not look like a picture taken with the camera at all.

Thanks for the help.

Image is the same in both EVF and LCD

I just nipped into the local camera shop to see if they had any 2gb cards. They didn't have any for sale but I tried one of the cards they had around and the card worked but still no image. I took a few shots just with the blank screen to see if the playback would show anything.

The playback of the images I had just taken were all black but the images which were previously on the card played back fine through the lcd.

I think then, this means the sensor is at fault. I need to contact the previous owner to see if I can get at least some money back to pay for shipping to leica

To add to this, I have been testing out the AV cables and the display on the screen is that of the lcd and evf but larger. I think its conclusive that the sensor is at fault.

I have emailed Leica asking about the process I need to go through in order for it to be replaced. I'm hoping to hear back from them tomorrow so I can get the ball rolling

I would be interested in knowing if they still have D2 sensors to replace yours with? I called Leica in the US earlier this year and if I remember correctly, she said they were almost out of them. :(
