proenca Posted July 19, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi there, toying with the idea of doing a M Leica Lens website - collection of information about each lens manufactured for M , with samples. However, samples would be in DNG format - to exclude post processing variables. So lets say, if I was thinking of buying a specific lens, lets say a 24mm Elmarit 2.8 ASPH, I would go the website, check its specs, downloaded 3 or 4 DNGS taken with that lens ( and my camera ) and see what the lens was capable of or what would tipically deliver. I know this is a debatable topic - some picture would gladly send some of their DNG's for others to download, while other photographers would be 300% against, due to photography rights and this and so on. Would you contribute to the project ? send your DNG's ? And you think would be helpfull a site like this ?

Guest Ming Rider Posted July 19, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2012 I would happily send you some but please don't make the common mistake of restricting it to Leica lenses. I use Voigtlander M lenses.
tobey bilek Posted July 19, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2012 Post unprocessed JPEGS with option to download DNG files. Unprocessed means no curves, no sharpening, no levels, no saturation changes. This will allow quick viewing.
brianv Posted July 19, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2012 I typically shoot many test photo's with my lenses with the M8, M9, and soon to be added M9 Monochrome. Some are custom conversions. 1934 5cm F1.5 sonnar wide-open, on the M9 by anachronist1, on Flickr Some are with some unusual lenses, a 1936 Factory coated Sonnar, Dewdrop, 1936 CZJ Sonnar 5cm F1.5, wide-open by anachronist1, on Flickr Some with optimized Lenses: Korea2_f15_Summarit by anachronist1, on Flickr Summarit 5cm F1.5: modify for using F1.5 at all distances I would be glad to contribute the DNG's of my Test Shots for a project. WestMichigan Posted July 20, 2012 Share #5 Posted July 20, 2012 I would be interested in lending a hand. I can offer shots from: Voigtlander 28mm f1.9 LTM Rokkor 40mm f2 C (M) (Official Forty Summicron Clone) Voigtlander 75mm f2.5 LTM Leica Elmarit 90mm f2.8 M (early) Leica Elmar 135mm f4 M (late) Nikkor Q 135mm f3.5 LTM (1959) I'd be shooting with an M8 and all have uv/ir filters available. brianv Posted July 20, 2012 Share #7 Posted July 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, pissing us off is a bad thing. About the only way you could do that is by making an unreasonable personal profit with this venture. I don't that is what you've meant. At least hope not! proenca Posted July 20, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted July 20, 2012 to make myself perfectly clear about this : just a simple, Leica M lens oriented website ( also with Zeiss and Voigtlander lens ) where prospective buyers can download DNG samples of the lens they choose, also with each lens specifications, reviews ( from other sites ), ebay auctions, serial numbers, etc. No money is to be made out of this ( apart from paying the costs of the website, traffic, etc ) and no way into any way about the images - full credit will be given to the authors. just an informative site about lens to help people - so many times, when buying a lens, I whished that was a single site that agregatted all this information and I think the DNG's would be particular helpfull - full resolutions JPEGs are always nice, but that involves a lot of variables that users might post process and we do not have any ideia how they were applied and by how much - clarity, sharpness, contrast. If you are searching for a, lets say , 24mm ASPH 2.8 and can download 8-9 DNG's from different users, in real world situations, I think we can have a good idea how the lens behave in real world. Not meant to put resolution charts, neither do reviews on the lens - plenty of websites that do that often and some of them quite nicely.
IWC Doppel Posted July 23, 2012 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2012 I'd be happy to help. With : 21 Elmarit-M ASPH f2.8 24 Elmarit-M ASPH f2.8 28 Summicron ASPH f2.0 35 Summilux APSHERICAL f1.4 35 Summilux ASPH f1.4 50 Summilux II f1.4 50 Elmar-M f2.8 90 Elmarit-M f2.8 I would have found this very useful. As you say it is not definitive but does give the chance to see a full resolution DNG. I suspect it will raise as many questions as it answers, but nothing new there... Is this FF M9 and M8 bodies ? You will need some bandwidth ! PS another website was set up that might provide a really good base and link, I'll try and find ? PPS some very good pictures of the lens would help too ? tobey bilek Posted July 23, 2012 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2012 You need to have JPEGS posted for viewing with no adjustments save for a standard sharpening so they do not look totally soft. You pick the level. Then have matching DNG available for download. I will furnish some.
Guest Ming Rider Posted July 23, 2012 Share #14 Posted July 23, 2012 Proenca. When would you like delivery to commence ?
proenca Posted July 25, 2012 Author Share #15 Posted July 25, 2012 first of all, thanks for people trying to help. few news update : site is under construction at the moment, domain is bought ( will be revelaed later on ) and programming is being finished. as for bandwith, I've struck a deal for a large bandwith per month usage with a nice company - so site will be free, bar some voluntary donations - but that will come later one. At the moment, all on my expense ; so far so good ( except my credit card ) I will contact all of you will that wish to help - if more people want to join in, please send me an email to "goncalo" AT "proenca" DOT "eu". How I would want the files : - tripod based, if possible ( if not, indicate that no tripod was used. and if it's wasnt used, please take the pictures at high shutter speed - above 1/250 to possibly rule out camera shake. again tripod is highly desirable ) - indicate if the lens has 6 bit coding or not - a set of DNG's for each lens, full stops. example : 24mm Elmarit 2.8 ASPH DNG pictures, same picture taken at f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11 ) - same ISO on all DNGs of each lens. i.e. if you are taking 5 DNGs of the said 24mm Elmarit, use the same ISO on all shots ) A dropbox folder is already created for people to send their zip files ( one zip with the several DNGS per lens, different apertures ) or they can send by email if they wish Other info I can check by myself : ISO and Camera Model used. Thank again for supporting this project !
