and keep the M9 over the M9-P. It arrived this afternoon and the battery is charging

now. I figured I would get more return on the cash difference if I put it with some more

and bought one more lens.

What lens would you recomend?

Thanks for any help.

Best,

Rob

Open questions like this often bring a flood of advice for buying many lenses.

What lenses do you have already, and what type of pictures do you want to take?

As this is for travel, a wide-angle lens ~28mm makes sense. But only you know "what" kind of pictures that you want to take.

I have a Summicron 35mm F2.0, a Noctilux 50mm F1.0 and a Summicron 90 mm F2.0. Was thinking of another wide angle lens. Was reading good things about

24 mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH but it doesn't seem so readily available. I take it that it is no longer in production.

Which 28mm lens would you recomend ?

I will deduce your budget is the saved cash ~$1000- I went with a used 28mm V3 Elmarit, no regrets. The V3 is a bit bigger than the newer version, but is quite sharp. The nice thing about Leica- buy the lens used, sell it for about the same when the new lenses are in stock. Cheaper than renting.

No actual budget really....just looking for a phenomenal lens....would like to stay under 7500 USD.

Under $7500, Phenomenal lens... Get The APO Summicron... Just pan the shots and stitch later for wide-angle. Nikon made devices for mounting the camera on a tripod and moving it at the correct angles for a particular focal length, the "AP-2". Has a built in bubble level.

Random Ebay Example:

Although I suspect you can find any 24 or 28 within your budget, any speed!

I did the same with the M9 -- the premium for the M9-P was twice a much here as some places. As for optics, a 24 or 28 is very useful while 21 and below is ultra-wide. I use the 2.8/24 Elmarit-ASPH extensively; it's superb. Using an accessory finder is no big deal. I've never regretted getting faster, though I don't think I'd use a 1.4 wide -- someone on this forum raves about it. Otherwise the 2/28 Summicron-ASPH has a great reputation. If you do want to go for ultra wide, consider the Zeiss 2.8/21 as well as the Leica lenses.

I would suggest that all Leica built lenses of 28mm and shorter focal lengths are excellent - whether they are phenomenal is something else, and will depend on your usage and application as much as the lens. I've used the 21/3.4, 24/2.8 and 28/2 and all are startlingly goo optics - the 24/2.8 should be readily available in near mint condition from a reputable dealer often enough.

I've settled on the 21/3.4 because I liked the old 21/3.4 Super-Angulon and it replaces this lens in the digital world. I had no complaints about either the 24/2.8 or 28/2 though - both are in my 'superb' category. If you need speed then you budget gives you all the options.
