Beppe Posted March 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I insert my 1 gig Scadisk II or 2 gig Lexmar very often I receive the message card locked. But the card is definitively unlocked! Any suggestions? Thanks

Shootist Posted March 10, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2007 Use a different card and send that one back because it is defective.
tashley Posted March 10, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 10, 2007 With the rogue intermediate firmware release, and a Lexar 2gig 133X pro card, that happened to me three or four times but removing the card, replacing it and rebooting the camera sorted it. Worrying-ish but No Harm Done! ;-) Tim

lokewl Posted March 10, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 10, 2007 I have a similar problem when I first upgraded to firmware 1.092. After popping out card and replacing it into the M8, problem seems to go away.
Shootist Posted March 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 10, 2007 I used 3 different cards! And all of them read as locked? Make sure the llittle switch on the card is fully in the Unlocked position. I have been using Lexar 133x 2GB cards and a Sandisc E/II 1GB card without this happening. I also made sure the contacts on the card were cleaned using a pencil eraser befroe I used them. Not sure if dirty contacts could cause this to happen but it might be wise to try and clean the camera contacts also.

If you put a light spray of switch contact cleaning fluid such as Servisol on the contacts of the card and insert it two or three times, it will clean the camera contacts. I have not had problems with my SD card cameras but my wife had with her PanaLeica after cycling in India and I had with the CF card on my Sony R1. This procedure cured the problems. hammam Posted March 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 10, 2007 And all of them read as locked?Make sure the llittle switch on the card is fully in the Unlocked position. I'll second that: check the little tab on the side of the card. It must be slipped all the way towards the contact end. At least, it does with the Sandisk Extreme III. wlaidlaw Posted March 10, 2007 Share #13 Posted March 10, 2007 Beppe, Did it read the card as locked when you tried to upgrade firmware or did that go OK? If so I would try to reload firmware - certainly would not do any harm. If the card is writing OK in the card reader, when you load the firmware onto it, then the card is not at fault. Next step is to leave the battery out overnight to try to get the camera to reset itself - push the shutter release a few times with the camera swtiched on to make sure you are discharging any residual voltage. Charge the battery fully and reinsert. Do a menu reset on the camera and then try a card format. If this is not happening on a number of different cards then I am afraid it it probably back to the dealer. Wilson
BerndReini Posted March 10, 2007 Share #14 Posted March 10, 2007 Just checking. make sure you always erase and format cards in the camera, not on your computer. This has been working well for me.
ho_co Posted March 11, 2007 Share #15 Posted March 11, 2007 Giuseppe-- There have previously been reports in the forum of the M8 thinking that SD cards are locked when they are not. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the solution was if there was one, but as I recall, the consensus was that the M8 'card locked' sensor is either very picky or very flimsy or both. You might want to search for previous threads on the topic, but it has been some weeks if I'm not mistaken, so they may be hard to find. Good luck. --HC
Ross Stockwell Posted October 17, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 17, 2007 as I have reported elsewhere -- I have had this problem as well but .... I do not think it is the card. All this stuff about reformating the card/defective cards is mumbo-jumbo. Try cleaning the SD card contacts with alcohol - then insert the card back in to the M8 (power off). It may clean the heads of the M8 reader. In my case, the problem totally resolved - not a problem since -- I expect - despite my best efforts I got oil or other things (due to noremal handling) on the contacts which created an 'issue' for the M8. reply if your experience is different
