and I thought this is the Leica forum and we are recommending non Leica cameras? back on topic I think we hev to accept the fact that optical view finders are fast disappearing especially for P & S camera. I believe the D Lux 2 will ba a good replacement for the Digilux 1...

I beg to differ with all due respect.

There is a market for people needing a viewfinder, reason why some of the Canon digicams referred to above are not blind any more.

Then it's up to Leica to decide if they're prepared to do the same, otherwise don't be surprised if old leicaphiles like me go and see elsewhere.

Same for digital rangefinders and compact DSLRs by the way.

Procrastination has been in force for too long at Solms.:rolleyes:

I have never used the Digilux 1- but I have the D Lux 2- both have manual controls, both are Leicas or rather Leica/Panasonic, and both are casual cameras and /or complement other more serious equipment

So I dont think that both cameras are that vastly different

Cheers ,LCT

true, but the problem at Solms is that at the P & S market, it is Panasonic that is " controlling what Leica has to offer"

No disrespect, but Leica needs to attract younger users as well, users who may be able to accept non optical viewfinders/LCD screns.

I have the Digilux 2 and was initially concerned at the lack of optical viewfinder, but did not mised it since. and given the rapid development of LCD technology, LCD screens are getting better and better.

I have to admit that I am not a serious photobug and do not use my camera for a living.

Andrew one has a viewfinder the other does not, think about it!! ...... and how one takes photographs a bit hard to see through a LCD screen...........help@##$%#%$#

Leica needs to make cameras for all , canon etc are using both screen and LCD and for a good reason being that it caters for a wider audience not a individual

Hi LCT,

I would recommend the Digilux 1. Sure the higher ISO is seriously limited, but it's still a camera that has most of the features you want (and I never minded the grainy noisy high ISO shots, in fact I found myself often adding more in Photoshop). I passed my D1 to a friend of mine and she loves it. When I see her photos I remember the fun I had carrying that little box around (currently, my fun camera is an Epson R-D1).

If this doesn't sound like a good option, I would recommending what others have suggested: attach a viewfinder to a D-Lux 2 or one of the new Panasonics.

Saludos,

-santiago

Which model would you suggest to replace my D1?

I just want:

- nice images a la Leica;

- optical viewfinder (so no EVF plse);

- short lag;

- f/2.8 at least;

- 35-70mm at least (but no big nose a la D2 plse);

- decent 200 and 400 iso capabilities.

What about the new Nikon? 17 days.......you shoot Nikon already if I remember correctly, LCT? Perhaps another SLR isn't what you're looking for, though. Nevertheless, this new camera looks to be priced very competitively in it's class. I also like that new Leica C-Lux1 in the black finish for an ultra-compact, shirt pocket camera, though it doesn't seem to meet all of your criteria.

-Best, John

I still have my Digilux 1, and am currently using it again since my E-1 is back to Olympus to have its sensor replaced (a tiny hot column appears at high ISO images). I don't mind the bad high ISO, since I find the Digilux 1 very fast, and I seldom feel the need to bump up the ISO. That said, I hardly use high ISO anyhow (reason why it took me a year to find the hot column in the E-1 high ISO images).

But after having used the optical viewfinder on the E-1, which gives a 100% view, I can not imagine people overly happy with the Digilux 1 viewfinder. I really find it too limited to be of good use, since I have to keep in mind that what I see is not what is going to end up in my images. Although I still do prefer to look through that viewfinder in stead of holding the camera at arms length to use the screen for framing.

And it's fun again to see the D1 images which look pretty weird at 100%, but still print very nicely.

So what is the D1 like with B&W, is there a D1 look about printed images that is different. I am looking to buy one for art images no reality in this life

  • 1 year later...

maybe a canon g6 - i know that canon have plastic look to their images but your other criteria is covered. but i think that d1/lc5 high iso can be greatly improved with beat image. at least i had nice results even at iso 400. ill upload some in my gallery later.

i hate to say, G9 looks vastly improved

i would go for D-Lux 2 as opposed to D-Lux3

as for the Fuji's, F30 is the best for noise performance, only available s/h now

but they all suffer in daylight due to PF and CA.

F10, F20, F40 all suffer control wise

F50 is the new F30, has a bigger sensor but is Mp crammed

i keep an F30, an LC1, an Oly C7070

LC1 is dam noisy but best to shoot and use

C7070 has good IQ, especially daylight

F30 is supreme indoors
