Maybe, it has been claimed so on this forum, but I don't really notice a difference. If you are in a situation where a fast and large buffer is needed a DSLR is the better tool anyway imho.

That's a (moderated) point of view. In fact, v1.162 works perfectly well with many (not all) SD cards, and v1.176 is hardly better in this regard—it also works well with many but not all cards. However v1.162 is significantly faster than v1.176 which is a very good reason to prefer it. The fact that the M9 is a pretty sluggish camera when it comes to transferring the buffer contents to the memory card is no reason to accept it to become even more sluggish.

As far as I am concerned, I shall try the next firmware update to come, and when it turns out slower than v1.162 then I'll revert back to v1.162 immediately. Takes ten minutes to check out (and to revert, if necessary).

A surprising post - The forum was so full of complaints (none of them mine, btw, I never had a problem with any of the suspect cards) that we had to create a new section to hold them

Defining sluggish by the speed of the buffer is rather blinkered. It is rather like calling a six-shooting revolver sluggish because a machinegun spews out hundreds of bullets...

And somebody who suggests fighting WWI with that machinegun instead of the sixshooter is ignorant?

There IS A DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT in buffer speed when reverting to 1.162.

As I reported in the SD card problem forum, using Sandisk Ultra II 16gb cards with fw 1.162: when the buffer is full I can shoot another pic every 2 seconds. At the higher version number, I was being restrained to a 4-5 second wait time. NOTE: this requires using Compressed DNG with no JPG.

THIS IS AN ENORMOUS improvement for those of us who weep nightly into our pillows about the unfortunate buffer size. I am one of those who asked for a change when using the M8.

Not everyone who has buffer problems uses the machine gun approach. Those of use who shoot movement and sports have this problem.

I have posted ad nauseum about the need to SELECT appropriate shots rather than using a continuous mode of shooting. Nevertheless, some of us shoot such that the buffer fills. Big SIGH.

I asked for faster wides -- and got them. Dear Gnomes, I am now asking for a bigger buffer and a silent shutter. Santa won't bring them -- You Guys have to do this.

The only shotgun in my mind is the one I see in silly action pictures (from Hollywood, of course).

I think we are between a rock and a hard place with regard to the need to do everything in software in the M8/M9 series.

The good news is: when we coordinate a recommendation to Leica and they act on it, we get something like the Discreet Shutter Mode. The suggestion for this feature originated on this Forum and was adopted by Leica. Because our camera is controlled by so much software, all we needed was to upgrade the software. How cool is this!

When I bot the Digilux 2, I was in heaven.

When the M8 came along, I hurled my money at it!

When the M9 came along, it just got better.

My wife asked my why I bought these cameras, I told her that the M8 is the first camera that got out of the way of shooting pictures. The M9 is simply *Better*.

I use the M9 mostly to shoot dance in performance (or Dress Rehearsal, depending on how fierce the audience may be). I can't get all the shots I want (because the buffer is full). Mumble, mumble, ....

I want to restate my position again in different words: There is nothing wrong WITH THE SHOOTER when the buffer fills.

Slightly off-topic but does 1.162 have the latest lens profiles? E.g., I was at the Leica Store in Washington when visiting that city, they gave me a 21mm Elmar Asph to try, and when I looked at the files at home saw that they'd been coded as being taken with a 35mm lens. Upgrading to the current firmware, the lens was then coded as what it is.

The lens is always coded as what it is.

Let me take a guess. By the time you updated the camera's firmware, you also updated the software you're using to look at the image files ... like, for example, from Lr 3 to Lr 4. Right?

Has anyone been able to go back to 1.162? Is there any special instructions (such as renaming the file, etc.)?

I also want to know this, tried today but no go...how is this done?

Thx :)

I was at 1.176 (or whatever the latest one is). I just downloaded 1.162 from the Leica FAQ site and installed it. It came up just fine.

The downloaded file may need to be unzipped and the correct file (don't remember the file type) goes at the root directory on the SD card. In my case, it was next to the directory that holds all the images. The card does not have to be empty.

Actually, I am using Adobe Camera Raw 5.7.x I think. 8 year old G5 processor. Waiting for a refresh of the Mac Pro line or perhaps an iMac with matte screen.

Works exactly the same as going up... just follow the instructions for a higher version... You might have tried the zipped version... make sure the file ends with .upd

See the PDF here: Leica Camera AG - Downloads on updating the firmware...

I recently downgraded from 1.176 to 1.162, but that was on an M9, without the P... not sure what they did to 1.176, but bringing a sketch artist along and let him draw the picture is probably faster... (might also benefit my photos actually!) :)

Bill, Do you have a M9/M9-P?

Is it possible that this firmware might not be for M9/M9-P (perhaps M9 Ti)?
