arthury Posted March 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone here (besides Luminous_landscape) used their M8 in subfreezing temperature outdoors? How well did the battery handle it? Any other issues that I should be aware of?
Advertisement Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Hi arthury, Take a look here M8 in reallllly cold temperature. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
35mmSummicron Posted March 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 9, 2007 i used my M8 in temperatures in the range of -20 to -30 winter exposed (camera slung over my shoulder) for a couple of hours and a few days without any issue. i do this with my dSLR as well, and usually keep the camera turned off to help preserve battery life. if you plan on doing this, make sure you wear gloves. the brass on the M8 sure gets COLD! kidigital Posted March 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2007 Hi Arthur, We've had a number of below zero fahrenheit days here this winter. In fact, it was four degrees fahrenheit yesterday morning. Exposed to the elements, the battery will weaken quicker, but no more than any of the Canon batteries I have used in the past under similar conditions (5D, 1DS). I did try some shooting in early February on one morning when it was -16 F with a windchill of -40F. I managed to stay outdoors for about 20 minutes with a newly charged battery ... the battery still showed all of its bars when I went back inside. In that instance, it outlasted my tolerance for the cold. Kurt
mitchell Posted March 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2007 I've shot below zero f in wind, and haven't noticed any problems (for the M8 that is.) Best, Mitchell
scho Posted March 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2007 Has anyone here (besides Luminous_landscape) used their M8 in subfreezing temperature outdoors? How well did the battery handle it? Any other issues that I should be aware of? I don't go out to shoot when it is below zero (F), but I've used the M8 several times in the past weeks when it has been in the teens. I do keep the camera under my jacket when not shooting. No problems with camera or battery.
robertwright Posted March 9, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2007 ditto for me. New York has had subfreezing temps for the last month and I have had the camera out most days for an hour or more streetshooting or in the bag on the way to a shoot (it is always with me) and I have had zero problems. It got snowed on the other day too and a little melted snow did not seem to make a difference. I heard something about the lcd being susceptible to moisture damage, so I didn't leave it out too long. Mostly outside my gloves cover most of the camera! Faith is a funny thing but every day that it works I feel better about it after my first one died after 24 hours. This camera has had no problems. Big downside to the cold is wearing gloves and changing lenses, it is hard to keep the chamber clean I think-and compared to my canon with a zoom lens that I don't need to change as much, changing lenses often on the leica will mean more cleaning.-But i guess that is an embarassment of riches. tashley Posted March 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did a lot of shooting at between -3 and -10 centigrade this last winter on a ski trip Zenfolio | Tim Ashley | Zermatt with M8 and I had no problems with battery or condensation. But as previous posters have said, wear gloves. Really! Tim
gwelland Posted March 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 10, 2007 Ditto - I've been shooting in freezing weather, snow, hail and rain and I've not had any problems. As mentioned by the others, the camera definitely gets COLD. I use the Neoprene case outdoors which helps a little - not the least of which it helps with me being a dolt ... xrogers Posted March 10, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 10, 2007 Over the past week: 1. 90 minutes, about 15F, heavy snow falling, tripod (at night), 70 shots, one bar of battery. 2. 2 hours, about 20F, driven wet snow, 50 shots, one bar of battery. 3. 2 hours, about 10F, 20mph winds, driven fine icy snow, 50 shots, one bar of battery. No hitches at all. The M8 appears to be a very good winter camera---it holds good texture and variation in snow, while still providing shadow detail. Cold is a state of mind---M8, 50 Summicron. As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! i took this photo at Niagra Falls about a month ago when it was about -30 with heavy winds, and i was walking about testing my M8 for the first time. the bottom half of the image with the snow is normally a gushing body of water from the falls (you can look at the trees/buildings to judge proportions and scale). people on this forum need to be less neurotic about M8 faults/failures so that I may be less neurotic about M8 faults/failures ps. the right hand side of the image is brighter/less contrasy because there is a big cloud of mist from the falls just right outside the crop.....so again, no M8 issues andy
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! i took this photo at Niagra Falls about a month ago when it was about -30 with heavy winds, and i was walking about testing my M8 for the first time. the bottom half of the image with the snow is normally a gushing body of water from the falls (you can look at the trees/buildings to judge proportions and scale). people on this forum need to be less neurotic about M8 faults/failures so that I may be less neurotic about M8 faults/failures ps. the right hand side of the image is brighter/less contrasy because there is a big cloud of mist from the falls just right outside the crop.....so again, no M8 issues andy ' data-webShareUrl='https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/18310-m8-in-reallllly-cold-temperature/?do=findComment&comment=195857'>
arthury Posted March 17, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted March 17, 2007 Thanks, everyone, for being so reassuring. So far, I have used the M8 between (-14) to 12 deg F and everything seems to be dancing as it should in the M8.
