miatadan Posted July 2, 2012 Share #1  Posted July 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) How is the build quality of Leica X2? Same as M series? Is this camera just assembled in Germany or some parts from Germany. Is build quality of lense simular to M series? Better build quality than Nikon?  I just sold my Nikon D5100 dslr and lenses at a loss... The Nikkor 28mm AF-S F/1.8 , I had less than 1 week. Before the 28mm , I had 35mm AF-S DX F/1.8. Never liked zoom lenses in general.  Realized that Nikon dslr was always just sitting on shelf because to bulky to carry with me everyday. So I sold Nikon stuff to friend, less than 320 shutter activations on camera.  Hoping that picture IQ on Leica X2 at least as good as Nikon D5100 + 28mm AF-S F1.8  Wish X2 had F2 . Will this X2 still be close to performance I had with Nikon in low light?  Ant one here do same, sell Nikon dslr and go to Leica X2?  Decided on black X2 + optical VF  The last few summers when going to Europe, left Nikon D5100 at home and had to use Nikon P&S cam....would be much better off with X2, small but good IQ. Not much point in having the better camera at home when travelling. In the past during film camera days owned Leica C1, ZX2, MiniLux etc  Dan
Advertisement Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Hi miatadan, Take a look here X2 build quality compared to M series?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Spaniard69 Posted July 2, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted July 2, 2012 If you are wishing for whistle and bell like a DSLR. The X2 IQ is comparable. I sold my Canon 5DM2 and L lens to get the X2 as well. Reasons, too heavy to lug along during vacations. I very happy with the performance of the X2 becoz it's light and does not weight me down. Don't have to worry abt changing lens anymore. Â Get the grip for X2 as well.

NZDavid Posted July 2, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted July 2, 2012 If your favorite lenses are semi-wideangle primes of f1.8-f/2 then something tells me this camera will be right for you. The maximum aperture is f/2. You will love the compact size and light weight. You will find the image quality superb, even in low light, and should easily match or surpass many DSLRs. Build quality should be first rate. The X1 dials were sloppy; the X2's are supposedly a lot tighter. Where a product is made does not tell you how well it is made. All M series cameras are superbly made, but you are unlikely to be disappointed with the X2 and will find it a worth successor to your old film compacts. NZDavid Posted July 2, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted July 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Oops, so it is! I was confusing it with the D-Lux 5 which is f/2. Faster would be nice, but in practical terms I don't think it would offer a huge amount of extra DOF. You would get faster shutter speeds in low light but you can crank up ISO and still get excellent results with the X1/X2.

You don't give your gear much chance do you!  You've already bought the X2? Then you can make your own mind up about build quality and image quality. It's not the same as an M Leica, but then it's a fraction of the price too.  Whatever you do, just give it more time.

I have not purchased the Leica X2 yet. I said decided on X2 as feel this be best choice, also read reviews on Fuji X100 but always like Leica better.  Only 320 images because had to take smaller camera ( Canon ixus or Nikon coolpix ) on my trips as only take 1 carry on luggage with me. There is always stop overs at different airports.  Love the M9 but can not afford $7000 for body & $1895 for Leica 35mm f/2.5 Summarit-M.  From what I see online the physical size od the X2 is similar to Nikon J1 or Olympus E-PL3. No store here has them in stock, special order item.  This is why looking at reviews online and checking opinions of people who actually already have a X1 or X2. NZDavid Posted July 3, 2012 Share #10  Posted July 3, 2012 All good reasons for looking at the X2. And no point in hanging on to gear if you are not using it. We've all bought stuff we later decided was wrong. Sometimes you have to try it for yourself.  Compact makes sense for travel. You may also like to check out the D-Lux 5. Excellent image quality at lower ISOs, and a very versatile f2-3.3 24-90m-equivalent lens.

and that's another reason I think the OP is not going to necessarily love the X2. These camera's take time to get the best results, although the X2 is a really nice improvement to the x1 with faster auto focus, etc.  I don't think many users would hate an X1 and love an X2...therefore it might be the best idea to buy a preowned X1..and use and see how you like it...Image quality is outstanding..some say sharper than the X2...the ISO performance is great and it's an incredible camera.  I think this might make sense for you...your expectations seem pretty high for the X2 and that's understandable but I think (both) these cameras take practice and time to get the best performance.  Just my .02 cents. I am a die hard fan of both.

So it is possible to 'hate' the x1 and love the x2.  But I am in total agreement that it takes time to learn the x1 (and in all likelihood the x2)

How large is image though optical viewfinder compared to looking though viewfinder on Nikon D5100? Can not find answer to this...  Can I use external viewfinder all the time instead of the lcd on back of X2? Is there indication of focas when using external Leica viewfinder? NZDavid Posted July 3, 2012 Share #14  Posted July 3, 2012 The 35mm Voigtländer viewfinder also works well, looks good, and costs less.  It's very useful in bright light when you can't see the LCD image and also for stabilizing the camera. The only focus indication is a green light visible just below the viewfinder -- so not completely accurate but fine for most situations.

georg Posted July 3, 2012 Share #17 Â Posted July 3, 2012 The X2/X1 ist not made in Germany, many components are just taken from much cheaper cameras, but as long nobody goes to court (hardly any German competitor affected by this false claim) they can continue to label it that way. I've asked if the lens is made by Leica during the X1-presentation...silence... I hope they finally get their job done with their new production site and R&D investments. Â I've decided to take a Sony Nex (e.g. with a used 28Asph + Novoflex adapter), the handling is confusing and there is no AF but otherwise it's the better camera, IMHO. Just like the M9.  They must have some final work done in Germany to qualify for the "Made in Germany" label. Just like the M9.  Which components are taken from much cheaper cameras?
