In a recent interview with THEME (highlights), Stefan Daniel has offered some interesting clues about Leica, where they're headed - and what may be in store for us in the future.

Seems the M10 will almost certainly have a CMOS sensor with live view.

Also good to see is that lens production is up from 1k to 3k per month now!

It's hardly a long article. People will want to make up their own minds from the source material, not an interpreted executive summary, I would suggest. Anyway, now they have the choice.

Your original post should have linked to the interview, not your interpretation of it. Or, you should have made it clear that you have interpreted an interview on your website for your own benefit and that your link takes the person to that interpretation.

The link you have above is misleading at the very best and is currently being discussed by the Moderators.

Actually, I'm getting two links - to the original, and to DN's highlights.

Anyway - on the CONTENT - rather interesting, especially the production figures. People ask about those fairly often, and it is good to have a source.

Lens production ramped up from 12,000 per year to 36,000 per year. But since Leica has about 27 lenses in the current lines (M + S), that is still not very many of each particular lens.

I didn't feel so convinced with the M7 / MP reaction. They are not dropping out but still it's reliant on sales which I feel is going to decrease exponentially unfortunately.

Well, you cannot expect them to build products for which there is no demand.

My reaction to the interview is that yes, they do understand the need to target a wider market – not just more of the old market. So in the sweet bye and bye, there will be a 'breakout camera', the camera I have written about – not necessarily the one I have envisaged; possibly an even better and more innovative one.

Hey, Mr Daniel is speaking of the huge price gap between 2000 and 6000 dollars! Right! And were do we start to fill it, at the 3000 end or the 5000 end? I think the question is also the answer.

Why do we need to wait till Aug. 28 if they are building the MM alongside the M9 already?

What we have seen until now has been largely specially built 'null series' pre-production cameras or even prototypes. Getting real series production up and running is a very different matter. This is exactly was a 'null series' is for.

Sometimes, Michael, your logic is sublimely obvious. I never made such expectations. I thought there was a peculiar air about his comment though. Perhaps a back pedal reaction against what Kaufmann has said recently about film cameras and such. Helps not to say that film is dead when you sell film cameras.

Perhaps the M10 will be evolution and not revolution, the 'splash' will be a more affordable mid tier product. The question will be what lenses it offers, a micro 4/3 system with AF ?

I still feel the 'right' and likely M10 will be a premium product that closes the gap to medium format and justifies the resolution focus of the new lenses. I hope the new sensor doesn't produce images like Nikon or Canon, they leave me cold most of the time .....

Happy to keep my 9 and get better at photography and processing
