fernando_b Posted March 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The flare in image seems to me a little strange. Where the arrows are red the light source is external to the field and the effect is more pronounced than the case of source in the field (green arrow). I would expect the opposite, someone can explain? R135 lens wide open and K64 film. Lens glasses are enough clean, but the hood was not extracted. Fernando. Advertisement Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Hi fernando_b, Take a look here Strange flare?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RITskellar Posted March 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2007 It's probably a long shot, but I once saw something similar with a film of mine. Look at the frames before and after this one on your roll. In my case it was caused by a light leak that affected one edge of my film and appeared as rays like this. If your neighboring exposed frames reveal something similar, then you have your answer. If not, well, it must be something within that scene specifically. Not sure. Nice shot though! plexi Posted March 8, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 8, 2007 The lights outside the frame hits your front element at a steeper angle, and that`s probably what causes the increased flare compared to the in-frame lights, but they can also lead to overall reduction in contrast, wich isn`t as easy to spot in a situation like this. But you really should use the hood in situations like this, and of course no filters...
telyt Posted March 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2007 It could be light bouncing off something in the camera's mirror box. The light source, being barely outside the picture area, is being projected onto something near the film gate but not on the film. I've seen this with two of the most flare-resistant lenses I've used, the 35mm Summicron-R (2nd) and 60mm Macro-Elmarit-R.
fernando_b Posted March 9, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted March 9, 2007 Doug, thanks, I'll look with attention, may be there is something reflecting (may be a some little area with black paint removed). Amund, I agree I should have used the hood. Andy, it is a shot of about one second. The frames before and after have no problem. Fernando.
SoFi-Chaser Posted March 9, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2007 Hi Fernando, The green arraowed effects, I know as well, when using K64 at exposure times > 1s. If they're not on the exposures before and after, please tell me (via PN). The red arrowed effects are almost for sure caused by the missing hood. regards, Torsten
fernando_b Posted March 12, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted March 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Torsten, exposures before and after are taken with a 50/2. I will test soon, again with the 135/2.8 and other lenses, with and without hood, on a different film. Fernando.
telyt Posted March 12, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 12, 2007 I doubt the hood will make any difference when the light sources are as close to the film gate as in this picture.
fernando_b Posted March 13, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted March 13, 2007 Doug, I suppose you are right, I've done a schetch with the hood extension and the angle of view of the 135. The conclusion is that with a light source in that position much more than half of the front element is illuminated. However I've looked with care to the camera, internally is perfect non reflection possible. May be the reflection is at some glass elements of the 135, one of them is very thick. If so, I've to survive with it. I like very much the 135 field of view. Fernando.
