cornellfrancis Posted June 2, 2012 Share #21 Posted June 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had an almost identical issue with my M3. Sent it off to Leica NJ last week. They are calling it a light leak. They are charging me $455 and 4-5 weeks to get it fixed and CLA'd... Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Hi cornellfrancis, Take a look here WTF? Is this a shutter problem?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanG Posted June 4, 2012 Share #22 Posted June 4, 2012 BTW there is a quick and easy way to check for this problem on a focal plane shutter and also to make sure high speeds are not way off. You need to remove the lens, open the back and hold it in front of a CRT television that is on. (This may be hard to find today.) Fire the shutter at 1,000th and you will see a thin diagonal line somewhere in the film gate. Keep firing it until you see it a few times at both the right and left sides of the frame. If both look to be about the same width, exposure is at least fairly even. Then drop down to 1/500th and repeat. The line will be twice as wide. Then try 1/250th and the line will be twice as wide again. You can't get an accurate measurement of shutter speed this way but can easily tell if there is a capping problem and see if there is a big problem with the speed. I used to check my cameras like this pretty often to make sure there was no major problem that would only show up after processing. I'd check flash sync too. I'd also look for a hair or anything else caught in the opening, cloth coming apart, and look at the shutter itself from both sides as I advanced it slowly... especially to make sure no light leaks between the curtain caps while cocking it. TomB_tx Posted June 4, 2012 Share #23 Posted June 4, 2012 BTW there is a quick and easy way to check for this problem on a focal plane shutter and also to make sure high speeds are not way off. You need to remove the lens, open the back and hold it in front of a CRT television that is on. I've used this method for 40 years to check for shutter problems, and have kept one CRT TV largely for this reason. I also have a digital shutter speed tester, but the TV method is faster and simpler for finding many issues.
runes Posted June 8, 2012 Author Share #24 Posted June 8, 2012 Photo Suffren to the rescue! They took a look on it and tested the shutter and was able to fix it. At 1/500 the real speed was 1/1000, and at 1/1000 the shutter was "way too fast" to quote the repair guy. I will send in the camera for a full CLA when I get back home, but first there's three more weeks of travelling. Hopefully the camera will function OK all the way. :-)
xalo Posted June 8, 2012 Share #25 Posted June 8, 2012 Good news, Rune. Thanks for sharing. And, did you get out of the shop with your repaired M6 alone? Cheers, Alexander
runes Posted June 8, 2012 Author Share #26 Posted June 8, 2012 Good news, Rune. Thanks for sharing. And, did you get out of the shop with your repaired M6 alone? Cheers, Alexander Almost, I only bought a soft release and an ND filter. I tried the Zeiss Planar 50/f2 and was really tempted, but I rarely use 50mm so I decided it was best not to buy it (also because my wife was with me ). I went to Negatifplus and bought an assortment of films, and walked from there to Blvd Beaumarchais only to discover that all the shops (except one) was closed because it was Monday. Thanks for all the help Alexander.

runes Posted June 8, 2012 Author Share #29 Posted June 8, 2012 Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy but I object to "WTF" being used here. When I wrote the OP I was (almost) in a state of shock. However, I shouldn't have used such an expression. My apologies.
