Interesting read as always. Suggests to me that CMOS equipped M body will not be a numbered camera as MM isn't - perhaps MLV (live view). Hopefully will then run in parallel with M9 giving a choice and providing an option for those who find a rangefinder difficult.

He was, I think (awkwardly) referring to using LR or SEfex on a color file as an alternative to buying into the all-b/w approach. With Puts, it's always a challenge deciphering the syntax and typos.

I like to take a survey of what kind of weight and "faith" people here put in Erwin Puts reviews and opinion pieces about Leica lenses and cameras and how much does that say affect your opinion about say the Leica MM..etc

Do you consider Erwin Puts articles to be like Pontifical Declarations, that is what he says is written in stone and the final word about Leica, there is no room for contrary views, end of discussion . Puts has spoken!! What do you think?

Thanks in advance

Why don’t you just read them? Everybody of us needs to judge the value of a review and the authority of the review for himself in his own context.

Erwin has a vast knowledge of Leica and access to resources nobody else has. Other reviewers are amazing photographers and shaky on technology and/or history. Still others concentrate on the practical applications, The Internet is a market place and you must decide for yourself which soapbox to visit.

I have.. this is a survey..

Lets stay on point!!

Do you or do you not consider Erwin Puts's articles on Leica to be the final word? that is, if he says that the Leica MM is a fantastic camera, you will put aside all considerations and buy the camera because Herr Puts has spoken, oder ja oder nein?

Will you abandon your Leica M7 because Erwin Puts says "film is dead"..Leica has abandoned film? Yes or No?

kind of tired of threads that have devolve into ad hominem whatevers. visiting rff has been depressing: truly ugly. hope this forum will stay away from that.

I tend to agree with you, I can see this developing into another of these threads which goes nowhere in the end. What is the point of it ????

What planet are you on? There are no authorities here: if the Bishop of Rome himself carved a Leica review on tablets of stone and sloshed it with holy water we'd take it on its merits.

I think Erwin Puts represents an unique viewpoint into Leica. He has many very valuable informations that you don't get anywhere else.

One thing I very much like about his latest blog post on the Leica M Monochrom and the 50mm APO Summicron ASPH f/2.0 is that he is not pissing around about the price, but simply states how this technically, in terms of resolution, is the best ever made. And then he elegantly puts it into perspective historically. It's very elegant and contains a LOT of information you would not find anywhere else.

And his compendium will be available in this month as digital file ... then you can search in the books.

In my opinion, when it comes to technical evaluations and reviews of lenses he is the leading authority on the subject. I tend to take Erwin's lens reviews as reliable facts and those of most others as 'opinion' His approach is scientific and professional, including the use of MTF equipment. Just the facts, please. His lens review books are excellent and in my experience accurate in their opinion.

I've never actually spoken to him in person, but among all the reviewers, he certainly strikes me as the technically most competent and knowledgeable in many areas. Over the years we've exchanged a few emails and he was polite and helpful.

Erwin will also post some interesting articles pondering bigger issues in the context of the entire industry or history. He certainly strikes me as a very intelligent and educated fellow.

On the other hand I would probably trust the opinion of someone like Mike Johnston or Thorsten Overgaard, who are both serious shooters, when it came to an evaluation of the gestalt of a camera. How does it feel in your hands? Do the ergonomics work? How is it as a photographic tool? These are two photographers who have been shooting for years, have used all sorts of cameras and worked under all sorts of conditions.

Let's divide the internet commentators in to three categories.

1) engineers / scientists sometimes with an artistic bent

2) professional photographers with tons of real life experience, who have some technical knowledge, but really aren't engineers or technical experts.

3) Bloggers

Erwin fits in category 1

I often read E Puts review of a piece of equipment I am thinking of buying . I will also read Sean Reeds review of the same piece. Not to make a decision but to help me to decide if I want it. E Puts is a very knowledgeable man I just think he can be a bit heavy going at times.

Most of the time I can read a Puts article (web or his book) about a lens - and having tried it myself, sya "Yep. he was right!"

His descriptions are accurate. I often disagree about what is "good" - I like lenses he doesn't, and I don't buy the argument he has borrowed from Zeiss that "maximum contrast at 40 lppm" is the gold standard for lens performance. I'm more interested in absolute resolution.

May I remind you Erwin Puts is not German, nor is he advocating such a thing.
