acavill Posted May 12, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted May 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm traveling to Rome and Florence in June and want to travel light. I have a 50 lux and a 35 lux. macrobernd Posted May 12, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted May 12, 2012 I traveled last wekend with four lenses (28-35-50-90) and at the end of the day i took 80 % of the photographs with my 35 Lux. So take your 35 lux. Its is better for street and architecture. Have fun in Rome!
jrovner Posted May 12, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted May 12, 2012 I'd vote for the 50, because it lends itself to simple compositions and portraits, which are my preferred subjects. I used my 50 Summilux last summer in Rome and Venice with wonderful results, and my 35 never left my suitcase. But it would be hard to go wrong with either one. Â You can see my Rome and Venice photos on my photo site, linked below. Have fun!
Paul Verrips Posted May 12, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted May 12, 2012 Been to Paris 3 weeks ago with 21/35/50. Shot 100% with 50lux, it's just my prefered length. When i travel through the countryside i switch lenses more often than on a citytrip.
gabriel Posted May 12, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted May 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) 35 Lux and you can crop if necessary afterwards. You will need the extra width for buildings and interiors etc.
janrzm Posted May 12, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted May 12, 2012 I also have the same lenses, 50 is my preferred focal length, however I have been to those cities and I think 35 will give you more flexibility.
cknobel Posted May 12, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted May 12, 2012 I travel Europe a lot and I would go as wide as possible. Great architecture (buildings, towers, bridges), landscapes.... And the Italos are not in for taking their portrait; so in your case, go for the 35mm....
AB007 Posted May 12, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted May 12, 2012 It depends on your style. Take what you shoot with most. You can take both too

I could take both but would prefer to save the weight. Which one do I take? Â I'm sorry, but I cannot for the life of my think of why you are worried about saving a few hundred grams of weight while leaving behind one of the two best Leica lenses ever produced. It's Rome and Florence, two of the most amazing photography destinations on the planet. I think if you don't take both lenses you should honestly ask yourself if it might not make sense to sell one. Â I often travel internationally with only a carry-on, but my 35 Summilux FLE and 50 Summilux ASPH are never left behind. The 18SEM and the 90 Elmarit-M sometimes don't make the cut, but never the 35 & 50.

The simplicity of one body and one lens...  I often carry only my M9 with a single lens, but that is not the same as traveling with more than one. A 35 Summilux in the hotel room safe is easily retrieved, while the same lens 8000 miles away, at home on a shelf, is not.

Well, as someone who has traveled to Rome and Florence on multiple occasions, and as someone who owns the same lenses as the OP (current versions of the 35 and 50 Summlux), I disagree. I have yet to find one lens that works in all situations.

I have yet to find one lens that works in all situations.  Yeah, I've been to both places as well. And I have both those lenses. And I disagree with you  Remember what the OP would prefer. One lens ideally and weight unencumbered. The 35/1.4 is versatile enough as a one travel lens option.
Phil U Posted May 12, 2012 Share #20 Â Posted May 12, 2012 If it must be one it would be the 35, if it were me. Â Disclaimer: I have never been to Rome or Florence or own, or ever owned, a summilux of any description. All donations welcome though....
