jaapv Posted May 11, 2012 Share #21 Posted May 11, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica is a case study in camera marketing. One one hand they re-badge Panasonic cameras and charge more. On the other hand, they progressively remove the red dot first and then the engraving on the top plate, and charge even more for their M9s, albeit with a super high performance B&W sensor. All of this would not be possible if not for the sheer vision and quality of their engineering. Goes to show that marketing will not work without strong engineering and R&D. \What rebadged Panasonic did they present tonight? The `M9M is actually not expensive @ 6800 Euro. The Summicron 50 asph is not a replacement of the Summicron classic. It is an additional lens and Leica’s way of building the best lens ever made. As such it is a good addition to their line of 50 mm lenses. I saw huge prints of the lens on the M9 and it carried the results into S2 territory. 6000 Euro will save you the expense of getting into the S2 system. NZDavid Posted May 11, 2012 Share #23 Posted May 11, 2012 V-Lux 40 = TZ-30. It's actually a superb little camera with a mega zoom and excellent video quality. Not my thing, but my brother-in-law just bought the TZ-30 and is very pleased with it.

thompsonkirk Posted May 11, 2012 Share #27 Posted May 11, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) IMO the monochrome verison has more against it than for it. On the one hand, you get more resolution w/o the Bayer pattern; if you were lusting for more resolution that's a plus. But on the other hand you give up the infinite array of 'filters' available in BW conversion via LR/ACR/PS. I've been amazed at how much the conversion software can improve an image, not just globally (as with a glass filter) but locally. My BW work will continue to be shot in color and then digitally converted, if/when I want to. I'm not even slightly tempted by the monochrome sensor. Kirk The increased resolution and iso performance are a plus, but I think the real game changer will be the increase in dynamic range (I am presuming this will be significant, we shall see!). It definitely is a niche camera, and yes excellent results can be obtained converting colour to bw. However I wouldn't write it off. Maybe it's not for you, maybe it is. I won't be owning one any time soon, nor would I sell my photo gear to finance one. Second hand down the line maybe. I will continue to shoot Fuji Acros and develop in Rodinal 1:100 as before. However I am glad it exists. I love when a camera manufacturer doesn't follow the herd. To me it's more exciting than an M10 with better iso performance or live view. Paul J Posted May 11, 2012 Share #29 Posted May 11, 2012 Photokina is where the action happens. I do understand the frustration from the build up of hype but to be fair it is of everyones own doing. But I don't understand the anger at the company. This event has been about keeping your interest and capturing your imagination. It's about the brand showing that they are dynamic, brave and imaginative. Success on all accounts in my opinion. I also feel it's a taste of what the future of M will offer. Either way get out and take some pictures with what you have now and you will care less about it all.

While I like it as much as the next guy (i.e. not at all) the Edition Hermès seems to be a necessary evil. When the rich and famous are begging you to take their money, what are you supposed to do? At least it helps to finance Leica’s more serious efforts. Hasselblad’s Ferrari edition falls into the same category – it’s easy money and thus hard to dismiss. wattsy Posted May 11, 2012 Share #38 Posted May 11, 2012 It is expensive Jaap. Remember M8 £3000, M9 £5000 and now M9 mono £6200. Yes, the ratcheting up of the M digital body price has been relentless during the last 4-5 years (as recent as mid-2009, a new M8 could be bought for £2500-ish with a dealer discount) though a straight price comparison doesn't really tell the full story. The Pound has fallen quite sharply against most currencies (25% or so) in this post-2008 period and the value of money generally in Western economies has been eroded substantially in the same period (real world inflation rather than the fanciful official figures). It's pretty much the same story with other major camera manufacturers too – the flagship Canon and Nikon cameras are now comfortably around the £5K mark when £3K would have bought a 1D or D3 only a few years ago. Time to start thinking of investing in wheelbarrows.

Talking about the Monochrom you mentioned impressive prints. Here you mention M9 prints with the new 50. Are you talking about the same prints? Maybe an unfair question: do you think the impressive quality required both the MM and the new APO 50?
