Restricted lens list - 50 /2.8 Elmar M

I seem to recall reading about the lenses which have restricted use with the M8 in one of the earlier threads.

I have a Leica Normal 50mm f/2.8 Elmar M (retractable) but have no idea if this comes under the "old" model or the "new" - and for that matter if it can be used on the camera without damaging the insides.

Can anyone shed light on this??

All I can say that the 2.8/50 Elmar M (coded) that I got new a few weeks ago works fine and can be collapsed. The booklet that comes with it warns against using it with the M5 and the CL but not against the M8. Leica knew it was for an M8 and appended no warning. However, hidden in the M8 manual there is a line that it cannot be used with collapsible lenses except the 90/4.0. I only found that line after I had been using and collapsing the lens for a week. I even fired the shutter with the lens fully in. As nothing had happened to the cameras during the time I had been using it, I decided to ignore that part of the manual. Still no problems...

Considering that your 50 Elmar is coded - it may suggest that it can be used with the M8. But then the manual says otherwise!!

Confused!!

The manual says it can be *used* but not *collapsed*.

I measured the distance from the flange of the mount to the fully-collapsed depth of my lens very carefully: 20.85 mm. That, in practice, does not harm my M8 bodies.
