Anyone had their sensor repaired recently ?

Just curious if Leica can get hold of M8 sensors quickly, given the shortage some have reported of M9 sensors ?

the good news is that no one has posted about sensor issues for so long, perhaps the M8s are all so well bedded down now !

If as it is widely rumoured that the May 10 announcement will in fact

hearld the launch of the 26M pixil M10, Then it makes sense to make

replacement sensors for the M8 as a byproduct on the same wafers.

The reason for this is pure economics. The state of the art a few years

ago involved 24 inch wafers for making computer processors. I would

speculate that if this or larger technology is used for sensors then

both the yield of acceptable sensors will increase and the costs will

decreas. What is more interesting to us M8 owners is that it will be

economical to make replacement sensors on the parts of the wafer that

are too small for making the fullframe sensors. It would be crazy

and expensive to run a different production line to make a few M8

sensors

I may be optimistic but I would hope that we can look forward to 14 Mp

replacement sensors for the M8s using the same pixil pitch as the M10.

It would seem to me to be very unlikely that M8 sensors are still made. When the auto industry ends a product, they calculate the spares requirements for 20 years support, let the production lines run till these are produced and then store the parts.

Given the production methods of electronics, combined with the ease of storage. I would pt my money on Leica having a few hundred (few thousand maybe) M8 sensors in stores. The upfront costs of letting the production line run a few weeks longer are insignificant against tooling a new line, or keeping a line mothballed.

nice thought. however the costs of testing and designing a new sensor for a discontinued camera are not going to happen
