Carsten,

I had a similar experience with Canon's large format film scanner, which very quickly became unusably dusty inside (I assumed the cooling fan was sucking air in from outside). You need special tools to open it. Canon said I must have opened it and put the dust in there myself - presumably because I thought it would be a good idea. I had to take it to a third party repairer, who found a missing seal. Even when I submitted his report to Canon, they would do nothing. It was only after I arrived on their stand at Photokina two years ago and stood there arguing with their reps for half an hour that they agreed to reimburse me for the repair costs. You just should not have to go through this sort of blood pressure raising exercise to get your rights.

Leica service may not be terribly efficient and they are currently making a mess of the admin on the lens coding but at least they are unfailingly polite and helpful. They do take responsibility for their product and mend it when it goes wrong. We must be grateful for that. My experience with a faulty Digilux 2 was frustrating in that it took a long time but they never argued that it was faulty and in the end replaced it with a new one.

Roll on 1.10.

Hi,

I just had a chat with a product manager in Solms about the noise "problem" in the new firmware.

He confirmed that the new firmware has indeed a slightly different shutter noise. Why? Well, the shutter is released in two steps (something like pull the safety lock and shoot after that).

In the old firmware that was done together. In the new firmware, there is a small delay between the two actions, as Leica found that it works more precise. That's all :p

What I also understood is that the fixed new version of the firmware will be out within a few days.

Best Regards

So that would mean there is a bigger delay between the shutter button push and the actual shutter opening. That is something I am not looking forward to.

The delay between pre-release and the shutter releasing appears to be a function of the shutter speed that's set. At the higher speeds where the delay would be important it's very short. I don't know the exact figures without going back and re-analyzing the results.

Hi,

I did not feel any delay and if you look at the spectrum, it's more or less the same length:

The lower graph needs to be shifted to the right to bring the end points together. So what? I'm happy to accept that I'm getting an improvement.

Best regards

Am I interpreting this wrongly, Karl-Heinz, or is the cocking period shorter?

Hi,

looks like. However, my point was to show that the overal timing seems to be the same.

BTW, the measurement was not made by me. Sorry, I did not mention it. It's from another thread and I have taken it to show the timing. Bob made it.

Best regards

KH
