Here's what I have done quite often over the years: With the factory strap attached (leave the strap a bit long), simple carry the camera, classic style, over the left shoulder. Then, over the camera, wear a jacket long enough to barely cover the camera while it hangs from your side, protected from rain, protected from view. With the jacket not zipped, the camera is always ready to shoot. Simply reach for it with right hand. After the shot, it falls back into hiding. This method is very fast and discreet, especially for a one-lens shooter, and requires that no bags be opened. Â A couple years ago I met Vladimere, a man who shoots with an M2 with a small lens mounted. He had the lugs removed, and has the camera either in his hand or hidden in an inside pocket of his denim jacket. No strap ever. He reaches into the pocket and shoots in less than 1/2 second. Â I very much agree on the practicality of a belt system, although I found them more useful with a DSLR system than a M system. I am a wedding and event photographer. The belt system I have put together (I prefer LowePro) is supremely functional in those environments. One of the people I shoot with uses the ThinkTank system and I own three ThinkTank bags, myself. But even in those environments there are times where I would not wear a belt system. If it's a black tie affair I'm not about to wear a belt system. I represnt my clients. So I'll use something a bit more "classy" that is still practical. Some of the events have tables very close together. I'm not about to have a lens case smacking guest in the back of the head as I pass by. I have the vest and harness. I've never used either. It's usually too warm for most of the year to make either practical. Â The other thing is that I almost never leave the house without my iPad, keys, wallet and phone. Practical, for me, means toting all that stuff and a camera. I'm not an Apple fanboy. Before the iPad it was a 9" TabletPC. I can almost completely run my business from the iPad. Not to mention I like to read and I carry all my books/magazines etc on the iPad. I haven't purchased a paper book, except photo coffe table books, in several years. No matter where I go, unless it's work, a bike ride or a hike, I'll always have an M9 and an iPad with me. A belt system doesn't work for that. Too many zippers to close. Too many rain covers to close. Too many things to loose. Practical, for me, is being able to pick up one bag that contains all my stuff. Â My babreque date went wonderfully. I had my M9 and "poor mans noctilux" on my lap and my Hadley pro inside with two extra lenses and my ipad inside. I did use the ipad to show a friend something but it was only for a minute. I put my keys, phone and wallet in the front pocket and had a good time, unencumbered. When I left I Put my M in the bag, checked I hadnt left anything behind (easy with a single bag that has a single opening). I had the bag over one shoulder and sleeping son on the other. I then dropped it (the bag, not the son) onto the back seat of the car and off home. Â My Hadley is my main bag. It's always ready to go. It contains the things I want to have with me on a daily basis. I don't need "other" bags as well for my keys, wallet etc. I even have my ipad charger set up so I can charge it while its in the bag. I just grab a single bag and go. *I* prefer this bag to any other I own. I love that theres only one opening. I love that theres no zippers to fuss over, no raincovers to fiddle with. And NO velcro closers. I so hate velcro in a camera bags closing system. I like the way it moulds to the shape of my body so it's just as comfortable as a messenger bag as it is a shoulder bag. I love the fact it's made from a more natural material rather than the ugly, shiny synthetics that rub my clothes. I love the fact that it will, most likely, never wear out. I've replaced the soft pockets on my belt system already as the material gave out and flaked huge pieces of plastic onto my lenses. My Billingham 445 is a decade old and looks new. Sometimes, when I'm working, I'll need to pack something else (even a belt system). If I need to travel I'll take my TT Airport Airstream, which is also perfect at many wedding receptions. For hiking and day walks I'll kit up with the S&F belt an pouches. But if it's for my personal use it's almost always the Hadley. One simple bag. Always ready to go. Â I know others will find this bag either excessive or impractical. And they should go with their own needs/wants. But for me, nothing is as practical or functional as a Hadley. Â I'm pleased you've found your pefect system. It took me 20 years and over 25 different bags until I found mine. I'm glad they're different. I't would be a dull old world if we were all the same. I have Luigi's neck strap, but when it's hot and humid the red suede bleeds onto my shirts, and really I found myself just always wrapping the strap around my wrist. It was a toss up between this and the ThinkTank Retrospective 5, as they are both very similar.
