dkCambridgeshire Posted March 29, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) According to a very well known USA bookseller, the new 8th Edition of The Leica Pocket Book should be in the publisher's warehouse this week and available for sale imminently. Price is quoted as $39.95 and the book includes contributions by well known Leica expert and author Brian Bower and former Leica UK stalwart Nobby Clark. This is the first update since 2002 so hopefully includes most or maybe all of the lenses and cameras introduced in recent years. Best wishes dunk

farnz Posted March 30, 2012 Share #7 Posted March 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Listed at £28.60 including postage and packing at Steyning Photo Books (the UK company that took over Hove Books stock list). Pete.
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 4, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted April 4, 2012 Received my copy of the 8th Edition from Steyning Photo Books this morning ... 336 pages compared to 280 pages in the previous 7th Edition ... all newer lenses have slightly different MTF graph formats so can see at a glance which additional lenses are listed. All the S2 lenses are listed. Most of the errors in the Leica lens numbers tables have been corrected ie the incorrect 'years' ... but 1980 after 1959 s/b 1960. And the production dates shown for the Leica S1 ie 1977 to 1998 is still incorrect .. s/b commencing 1997 and probably extended beyond 1998. Camera and lens serial numbers are listed up until 2008. Browsing through the 'R' lenses section it's very noticeable that the only new 'R' lens introduced since 2003 was the 28-90mm. Twenty two additional M, R and S lenses are now covered by the new 8th Edition. The book is a big improvement on the 7th Edition and has many hours of interesting reading/browsing ... but I wish the book had cutaway illustrations of the lenses. I'm still browsing through the camera section ... including the 20 digital compacts plus the M8 and M9 variants and the S2. So far I cannot find the DMR listed anywhere? Best wishes dunk
farnz Posted April 4, 2012 Share #9 Posted April 4, 2012 Mine came in the post today too. Thick lustrous pages bound very robustly and two red page ribbons this time. Nearly twice as thick as the 7th edition owing to the extra pages and the quality paper and it's heavier. The packaging was clearly designed to deliver tanks to the theatre of war. Ditto dunk's comments on the content and I couldn't find a reference to the DMR at all either. All in all very pleased with it. Pete.
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 4, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted April 4, 2012 Considering the DMR is considered by many to produce the finest results of any DSLR (up to FF), its omission from the Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition is very surprising ... and more so considering that two dedicated Leica enthusiasts ie Nobby Clark and Brian Bower have contributed to the updates. Maybe the publisher could have asked Doug Herr to write a DMR report for the book. dunk

If that's the only omission then I'll happily live with that owing to all that it does contain. Pete.

andybarton Posted April 4, 2012 Share #14 Posted April 4, 2012 Ditto. Comes via some third party shop, though, which I'm less happy about. Delivery quoted between 11 and 24th April. Is this handwritten by Wearside monks, or something?

farnz Posted April 4, 2012 Share #16 Posted April 4, 2012 Just ordered via Amazon UK at £12.98 +p&p £2.80 (UK) Amazon UK is showing an odd advertisement for this title because it's using an image for the Leica Collector's Guide, has customer reviews that are for different titles and the only two for this title were written in 2001 and 2009. Fortunately the ISBN is correct though. Pete.
michali Posted April 4, 2012 Share #17 Posted April 4, 2012 I've ordered my copy from Steyning Photo Books. I looked at Amazon UK and also noticed from their ad that it appears to be a different book? You're right Pete ISBN no. is the same though.

rramesh Posted April 5, 2012 Share #19 Posted April 5, 2012 Heard from Camera Books that the book left publisher only this week. Will take a couple of weeks for web retailers to dispatch.
peter_n Posted April 10, 2012 Share #20 Posted April 10, 2012 Mine arrived today. At first glance it's a great update to the 7th edition which has been so useful. The book is much bigger and solidly bound and printed on quality paper so it looks like it will easily withstand the use my 7th ed. has experienced these last nine years. There's a terrific up-to-date listing of body numbers at the back and room for notes on many of the pages, a nice addition. The book was incredibly well packed and it was a real struggle to actually get it out of the wrapper. Highly recommended!
