Noctiluk again, a sad story

Two threads on Noctilux! I do not enter the questions: like only to share my stupid story regarding the old Noctilux (f 1,2).

In 1985 saw one on sale in Milano Italy: I was 28, single, still living in my family, a good job...BOUGHT IT: costly, but not exaggerate. Think I took no more than ten shots at 1,2, three or four just for test... my fastest lens at the time was a 1,5 Summarit SM; I was not Erwin Puts... in 20x25 prints seemed to me not so different from the Summarit at wide open....and found that is better focus at 1,5 and shot 1/15 than focus at 1,2 and shot 1/30, and that sometime you can use a 50 ASA instead of the beloved 25; I anyway

decided to use IT as STANDARD lens, just for prestige, by Jove ! It was big, did not fit in the std. case of my M4...SO BETTER ! Imagined that at least someone would have said "WOW, A NOCTILUX! you really cool shooter!"

It never happened... I tried everything to be noticed... two instances in 1989 sent KO my hopes :

- Dolomites, evening in mountain hut: as always, put M4 with Noctilux upon the table... another mountaineer, with a sort of expert sight, looked at it with interest... and murmured me "...mmmmh, Leica...fine...what a strange big lens...is it Russian?"

- Bavaria, motorbike trip, Schloss Linderhof : in the crowd at the entrance...two nice girls...ONE WITH A M2 ! with a gracious chrome Cron 35; approached instantly and made her the hyperstupid request: a picture of myself in front of the castle, taken with MY camera of course. I gave it to her, she gently cheered "mmm, you too..Leica...." I walked to the standard tourist position, strongly thinking to myself "damn, she CANNOT notice IT... something will happen..." I smiled, she shot (250 f8, still have the pict....),then gave back to me the M4, I said thanks crying in silent "stupid girl, don't you see it's a NOCTILUX !"...she went back to her group.

Aftert this insult, shooted 3 o 4 normal pict...not wide open... back in Italy, sold it at a very good price, bought the Summilux 50 chrome I still have... I'll never be concerned with some lens with "Noct..." even feel uneasy when read something about Noktons...

I excuse myself to take forum space for this kind of story... now I am 50, three daughters... still M4 and hope my M8 to arrive soon... if you like, next time I tell you the story on how i left falling on the road my BMW bike to save M4+Viso2+200 telyt in my hands....

Luigi--

I bet the girl who took your picture was just waiting for you to offer, "I'll show you my Noctilux if you'll show me yours..."

No Noctilux here, but I was once in Mexico, proudly carrying my M5. A shop owner looked up smiling and said, "Nice camera!"

I beamed. Finally someone had noticed!

And then he continued, "Yashica, no?"

Ah, the poor unwashed masses! :D

I recently started using my noctilux on my m8. I try to be discrete but it always a surprise in San Francisco to have some euro trash tourist making a fool of himself of a piece of man jewelry on my neck. I am starting to want to go back to my digilux 2 just to avoid broken English conversations. I think we have to add an 11th commandment thou shall not......I think the masses have a better deal.

Hilarious because it's true! It's man-jewelry alright! I huffed one around for a while until I realized it was overkill...Nice for a time though.

What's "eurotrash"? Do you guys have trailer parks over there? Do they drive pickup trucks and wear t-shirts without sleeves? Are they in my family?

Now what does this story remind me of...oh yeah, Mad Magazine, Oct 1978! Personally, I do not want anyone to take special note of my camera: I just want to them to think I'm an amateur taking snapshots with an older camera.

35 years ago I liked very much mechanical wrist watches. So there was some background about brands and so on. Cut.

During a birthday party held on a boat on the river Rhine a smart looking guy was sitting at my table and I was able to recognize his stainless steel watch.

Conversation was going on and than I ran into the trap:

"By the way your watch is very excellent, I like this Omega Speedmaster too."

He stared at me and shouted: "Sorry Sir, but this is a Rolex Daytona. Paul Newman bla, bla."

Since this time I'm a bit more careful with comments.:D
