urs0polar Posted March 28, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 28, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have a new-to-me M8 that just came back from Leica in NJ, and I want to put a screen protector on the LCD. When I bought the M8, it had a giottos aegis glass screen protector on it which had cracked in the corner. I went online and tried to figure out how to get the giottos protector off, and I have to admit I almost had several heart attacks as I saw other people's failed attempts and getting the thing off. You heat it with a hairdryer and the things is supposed to come off -- but if you heat too little, it might crack and scratch the screen underneath, and if you heat too much, the Leica LCD itself comes unglued and comes off with it. What!? So, I managed to heat it gently with a hairdryer and by slipping a NYC metrocard underneath it, it slowly came off. The M8 LCD almost came with it a few times even though I knew to watch out for the problem. So, a little too scary. Now that I have it back from Leica NJ (I sent it in as the RF was badly misaligned, which I was too stupid to check for when I bought it, oh well), I want to protect it, but not with the glass protectors that can either shatter and scratch or take the LCD with them. If I was made of money, I would have had the sapphire upgrade, but I couldn't afford it. So, what's the latest and greatest non-glass M8 LCD screen protector? Thanks! doubice Posted March 28, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2012 I use ACMAXX hard plastic protectors on all my digitals, including the M8. Available on eBay, as well as directly from the supplier (may be one and the same...) Don't buy the one specifically recommended for the M8, it is more expensive (surprise, surprise....), get the generic 2.5" version - it is the same. Here you go: ACMAXX 2.5 | eBay or here: ACMAXX LCD ARMOR Features I got fed up with the flexible plastic protectors; the corners eventually started lifting, no matter which one I tried. The ACMAXX is easy to remove as well - just slide a credit card under the corner and it comes off. Also had the Giottos and it cracked - just as hair raising experience to remove it as you had. Cheers, Jan

Cheers, Jan That's interesting, Jan - I backed off from buying the ACMAXX when I saw on their site you have to use a hairdryer to get the thing off. Is it really that easy to get a credit card under it? And does it come off without leaving any sticky residue? (I broke a Giottos on my M8 a couple of years ago and had 150 mile round trip to nearest Leica dealer to get it removed. Once bitten twice shy, although I do appreciate the plastic screen cover is not likely to crack like my Giottos did) Jim
jaapv Posted March 31, 2012 Share #7 Posted March 31, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) +1on Acmaxx. Dental floss will get it off and residual adhesive rubs off with your thumb.
albertknappmd Posted March 31, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 31, 2012 This sounds interesting but I remain a fan of screen patronus. I use them for both my M8s & S2. Yes they do loosen a bit at the edges in time but they are simple to replace. Dont want my LCD screens falling off when I remove the ACMAX or any of its clones... doubice Posted April 4, 2012 Share #9 Posted April 4, 2012 That's interesting, Jan - I backed off from buying the ACMAXX when I saw on their site you have to use a hairdryer to get the thing off. Is it really that easy to get a credit card under it? And does it come off without leaving any sticky residue? Jim Jim, When I removed the ACMAXX from a Digilux 2, I did not have to resort to the hair dryer treatment. Just lift up a corner with a credit card (or dental floss as per Jaap) and peel of the protector. Just to be sure, keep on pressing down with the credit card to keep the LCD screen in place whilst lifting up the ACMAXX. The ACMAXX site is rather simple and not much information is provided, just the usual disclaimers; the info about the hair dryer is probably one of those. I sent them a couple of emails a while back, inquiring about the actual size of some of their protectors and never got a reply. Go figure....
