Migs Posted March 23, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Friends: Â I noticed that using the Sumilux M 50mm f/1.4 lens with a BH filter gives me a vignette. (Darker on the edges of the image than in the center) Â Is there a way to use a filter for protection and not have this problem? Â Thanks amigos, Â Migs
Advertisement Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Hi Migs, Take a look here Sumilux M 50mm f/1.4 lens + Filter = Vignette. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Double Negative Posted March 23, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted March 23, 2012 What's a "BH filter?" Â I doubt it's the filter that's causing your vignetting. If you slide out the hood, you'll notice it extends far more than any filter ever would... The Summilux-M does have inherent vignetting when used wide open and doesn't completely go away until about f/2.8 even with coding. Â Check out the vignetting test near the bottom of this review. TomB_tx Posted March 23, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Perhaps a "B+W" brand filter? I notice the B+W filters I have do have an effectively thicker ring, that protrudes a bit more into the glass area than my Leitz filters.

I notice the B+W filters I have do have an effectively thicker ring, that protrudes a bit more into the glass area than my Leitz filters. Â Older B+W filters, yes. The regular B+W UV filter on my 50mm Summilux ASPH has a mount that is no more than 4mm deep beyond the thread. A Leica-branded filter is 5mm. Slim-mount filters, without the front thread which is pointless if you don't have to screw a hood into it, are even thinner. Â LB
Migs Posted March 23, 2012 Author Share #5 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Sorry! Its a B+W filter as suggested above.
Migs Posted March 23, 2012 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Thanks for the education on the vignetting of this lens at wide open! You all are most kind! Â Migs
1JB Posted March 23, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) As noted, wide open you will notice vignetting. In my use of the lens the vignetting has increased with lower light and with the hood extended, again at 1.4 and 2.0. It is easily rectified in post processing. algrove Posted March 24, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted March 24, 2012 Wish I had a 50/1.4 to vignette at 1.4 and 2.0.
