X1 Discontinued?

Hi,

Thanks for the information, that should increase the speculation leading up to the May announcement.

Personally I would love to see an X2 in the same small format with some performance improvements across the board and newer sensor with the associated benefits (image quality, ISO etc).

Brilliant news!

Just when i have had one for a year. Spent enough getting all the accessories. Not even mastered how to get the absolute best from it and BAM no longer a current model.

Joking (and slight anger) aside, though, it won't stop me using the X1 for some considerable time.

It's just that good (and im only 60% there with it) that i dont need/want to be worrying about it being an 'old model' etc

Worryingly, though, i feel that the last 40% of my learning curve will coincide nicely with the actual product availability in the shops/dealers of the new X2 (name to be confirmed) so natural progression dictates that i will follow this path?

...had me going there for a minute... :D;)

Seriously, I hope an X2 is on the cards. The X1 has had its fans and detractors but it has potential and I would like to see where Leica takes the concept next.

Regards,

Bill

Been on the cards for a long time, especially as they have been "giving away" the viewfinder and leather case.

Mine takes very nice shots when I can work round its numerous foibles.

Points taken but is it really worth worrying if you own/use an X1?

When/if the X2 comes out its only going to satisfy a certain percentage of the people looking into it i assume? It will, no doubt, have features existing and missing that each and everyone wants to see/not see etc so why worry?

Furthermore, its going to have to be pretty special to get me to part with my X1 and cough up more money as well for a newer version (unless there is a trade in loyalty scheme?)

Time, as always, will tell

Were the X1 to be recognised in similar vein to the Hexar AF and Hexar RF 35mm cameras (both take AMAZING pictures in spite of their considerable flaws) then the X1 might also become a future classic. Why not? It too is a truly great camera in spite of its well-documented flaws.

Prices for good examples of the Hexar AF remain about the same as the retail cost new when I first bought mine 14 years ago.

Yes but you know you won't have the latest and greatest gadget. You will be reluctant to show it off to people who might take pity on you for only having the old model or worse, think that you simply cannot afford a new camera.

You might say to yourself that it doesn't matter, but really it will eat away at you, harming your confidence and self esteem to goodness knows what ends.

Think about it, seriously.

Film cameras become classics, digital cameras become obsolete. ;)

But seriously, so long as you're happy using it, Leica's decision to discontinue the camera has no significance whatsoever.

Oh well, only a few weeks to wait to see its replacement! I shall be holding onto my X1 for some time to come (despite suffering badly from "updatitis"!) as I also have invested heavily in the accessories etc. I shall simply have to try to convince myself that my photography friends won't know that the X1 is obsolete - I shall just have to keep blowing them away with its IQ. ;)

It's good you mention them, because imo the Hexar AF is to the RF like the X1 to the M9 :) .

As someone who's first Leica was a IIIC I appreciate how the X1 is a digital reinvention of many ergonomic elements that make the LTM cameras such a joy. It is still my favorite digital camera to hold.

Of course my IIIC is substantially faster than my X1 (especially the "auto"focus) :D

I was an early adopter to the X1, but sold it after 18 months somewhen late last year. Seller remorse made me buy a new, black X1 about 3 weeks ago. There is simply no alternative to it if max IQ in a belt pouch or jacket pocket size is desired. I doubt that we will see these size and weight advantages in a potential successor.

Hi:

It wouldn't surprise me if there is an X2 in the works. However, we have to wait and see. According to "Leica Rumors:"

Leica X1 discontinued? | Leica News & Rumors

"Ausverkauft" means "Sold out," which could very well mean "Sold Out" due to a high demand and the production of new upcoming cameras like the M10 and a rumored "Black Sensor" digital M camera. Solms has a limited production capacity.

If there is an X2 I will look at it, but it has to have the same form factor that I can use all the present and very expensive accessories. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my X1 with all its "shortcomings," which are not that crucial to me. I'm not using the X1 for action or sports photography and the photo quality is second to none including my D700 and D7000 - the more I use it and the more I get acquainted with the X1, the better it gets.

Best regards,

Hektor

PS: I just checked B&H, the X1 is in stock both the Black and Silver & Black models. In addition the OVF, which I paid $289, it is back to $349.

And yet you love owning and using old cameras, James!

Can someone clarify this? I would seriously consider buying an X1 (even with the X2 on the horizon) if Leica is truly giving away the viewfinder and leather case for it.
