Bridge CS5 not responding

Hi I opened Bridge CS5 yesterday (been a little while since last used) and it opened fine, but as soon as I clicked on anything I got the little beach ball and then would have to force quit the application (using Mac)

 

Has anyone else encountered this? I downloaded LR4 yesterday and just wondered if that could have caused some sort of conflict

I've had it freeze up but never that quickly. Is it possible you had selected a folder that it was having difficulty reading? Maybe an update attempt and lost internet connection somewhere in the heavens?

Hi 1JB, thanks for responding :)

 

The loss of internet could be a possibility as I've been having bad problems lately with my service dropping out, so much so that I'm about to swap ISP's.

 

I'll do some more investigating as at the moment Bridge is a total no-go :confused:

On a Windows platform, I have never managed to be confident using Bridge. In CS4 it would suddenly falter then fail without rhyme or reason. For several years I try and avoid using it as much as possible. The slightest overload causes it to fail. I had hoped it would improve when working on Windows 7 64 bit mode. Afraid not!

Occasionally, my Bridge (CS4) behaves as described by the OP (spinning color wheel), usually when first being opened and then trying to open a picture.

 

It does NOT crash, but simply takes about 30-40 seconds to get its act together and open Camera RAW and/or Photoshop as needed. Eventually, it always works.

 

It does seem like some kind of directory problem - as though it just can't figure out where to find the needed program(s). Heck, I can't even find where Adobe Camera Raw resides on my computer (Application? Plug-in? Library?) ;)

Edit - actually, I just googled how to find the location of the ACR plug-in*, and in checking my machine, low and behold, found that I have two versions of the Camera Raw plugin (CS2 and CS4) - so that may be the problem, at least for me (Bridge can't figure out which to use?). I'm removing the antique CS2 version now and will see if that clears the problem.

 

*Library>Application Support>Adobe>Plug-Ins> (CS2 and CS4) > File Formats > Camera Raw.plugin

 

Additionally - if one opens a folder containing many pictures - that has not been opened in a while - Bridge often has to rebuild the thumbnail for every picture, since the "cache" of thumbnails is likely gone. For 200 pix, that can take a minute or more, during which Bridge is a bit slow in doing other things (like actually opening a picture).
