stunsworth Posted March 15, 2012 Share #23 Posted March 15, 2012 I don't have anyone on my kill list. Sooner or later the people that I might possibly want to put there make such arses of themselves that I wouldn't want to miss the fun. I think I know who the OP is referring to. He's an old 'friend' that has already been banned from the forum at least once for his disruptive behaviour. I guessed who it was after the first few posts. dmr10 Posted March 15, 2012 Share #24 Posted March 15, 2012 About eighty years ago in the western world they ignored someone, they couldn't ignore later on. Too late for many, as we know today. Maybe that ignoring is not the true gentleman's way.

Lindolfi Posted March 15, 2012 Share #26 Posted March 15, 2012 Well, I don't see the need to ignore anyone. This forum is a place where people 1] express and share their love for photography 2] share their knowledge on and experience with photography 3] ask for help in solving a problem in photography 4] seek company with other photographers 5] ask for attention and respect Now everyone has different personalities, histories, capacities etc. So the mixture of these five motives to be active on this forum differs also. If a member is primarily active driven by motive 5], it may produce a characteristic pattern of posts, usually at a high posting rate. If the need for respect is not fulfilled, the posts can become more polarized, and there may remain little space for the sharing of love and knowledge. However, usually arguments emerge that may give the opportunity for other members to sort things out. And so even these polarized postings have a function. Now we must remember that a polarizing member will rarily finish a discussion and will constantly shift arguments, because that member is not looking for the progress of knowledge. Motive 5] is too strong for that. However, ignoring is not necessary in my view. I think such members serve a purpose, but it may be wise to stop a discussion in time before it gets frustrating and appears to go nowhere.
IkarusJohn Posted March 15, 2012 Author Share #27 Posted March 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Okay, you're right. I am being more than a bit juvenile, and yes it takes all types to make the world go round. The purpose of this thread was not to put myself on a higher plain or anything like that. It was really just a bit of fun. Ivan, as I become more of a silly old fart, if I ignore the people who bore me, the less of an ass will I make of myself here by responding. Imagine a boy in the playground with his fingers in his ears saying "Blah, blah, blah - I can't hear you" - fruitless, but momentarily amusing. Actually, it's better than that - it's simply a case or walking away, and filtering the pointless noise. It is not ungentlemanly, or appeasing bullies - it's depriving them of any audience. Forums are actually better places for having kill files. It silences those who really have nothing to add, at least for those who have used their ignore lists. Look at the alternative - a tosser will still be a tosser after you have pointed this out to him - that is the purpose of trolls. Cheers John

IkarusJohn Posted April 12, 2012 Author Share #38 Posted April 12, 2012 Here's the thing. I follow the forum for two reasons: (1) to learn stuff about Leica gear, and this forum is an invaluable resource, and (2) to meet and interact with people I am interested in and enjoy interacting with. I do try to post positively, and informatively where I can, and sometimes I can't resist a laugh. If that offends anyone, I truly do apologise. Feel free to add me to your list - I won't mind. Honestly. My ignore list is populated by an extremely small group of people who I have found actually post nothing of even remote interest. They don't fit my two criteria above. For example, one posts endless superior, snide and unpleasant remarks on the Digital and M9 forums, yet he doesn't have a digital Leica according to his profile. I have not seen a positive post from this person. This has been pointed out to him in very clear terms on another thread - I feel sorry for the person who wasted the time explaining his irritation. So, I came to the conclusion he's a troll. When he annoyed me, I could have called him a dickhead or carefully explained to the person why he had nothing to contribute like the other forum member, but that would not add positively to a place I enjoy, and would have been pointless. So, I ignore him. The forum is then a better place for the rest of you and for me. Now, you can disagree with something I say, and I will listen if you have taken the time to understand what I was saying. I don't mind. People disagree with me by profession, and sometimes conviction, I guess. I can take it. But rude, backhanded, offhand and snide remarks designed to do nothing more than provoke, I'm sure we call all do without. Cheers John
andybarton Posted April 12, 2012 Share #39 Posted April 12, 2012 Any post which calls anyone or group "dickhead/s", is likely to be moderated. I know it's a pretty mild derogatory term these days, but it's not the kind of atmosphere that is encouraged. Thanks.
bill Posted April 12, 2012 Share #40 Posted April 12, 2012 Out of interest, is there a term for those who profess to ignore something but continue to niggle at it, a bit like trying to pretend that the boil on the end of your nose isn't there whilst being unable to resist giving it a squeeze every so often? Just curious. Regards, Bill
