Love/Hate relationship

I agree, obvious smear. Looks to me like there's a headlight right at the image edge which causes the "reference pixel breakthrough" problem and the smear extends to the centre of the image.

This was the situation which I suggested to Leica they should recognise by doing a reasonableness check on the reference pixels and taking a second blank exposure with the shutter closed if they are out of bounds. Whether we'll get such a firmware fix is another matter...

It seems to be down to the masking around the sensor not being as opaque as it should be.

does the light have to on the very edge of the frame/sensor? This photo does not show a light at the very edge.

My M8 does it with light sources just outside the frame - not very often but often enough to make me nervous shooting indoors with multiple spotlights around.

There's a border of 24 pixels (approximately) all the way round the live part which is meant to be in the dark. If the lens is projecting a bright light onto this part, you can get the problem. So typically, the light is at the edge/just outside. In your picture, I see the glare of a headlight so it looks like the light itself is just outside the frame.
