How about this for the M? Might block the viewfinder though:

An extended-life battery/grip that accepts AA cells would be great. If Leica doesn't do t, someone will :-)

And if - by chance - they have the same "Gallery" setup they had at Photokina, maybe they can have the "helpers" (I was taken to task for calling them flunkies a while ago :-) ensure the digital cameras have fresh batteries when needed. It surprised me that they were willing to display their wares in a "use me" setting with dead batteries. ("Here we have the MP, isn't it great? And here we have the M8, it's ... dead.") This was about an hour after the doors opened. Maybe they were making a point. I know I picked up a spare battery the day I bought my M8 (an extra $100 in the bank for Leica on every sale!)

Oh yes - while I'm wishing, a new fixed lens around 15mm would be nice with rangefinder coupling (just to make it special).

as a proud black M8 owner, and as much as i think this is an amazing camera, Leica was abit too ambitious in meeting the deadline of showing off the M8 at photokina.

they should learn from this and take their time. especially when many current M8 owners are waiting for the much anticipated 1.10 firmware.

....just my two cents.

ps. a pleasant surprise would be if they unveiled FW 1.10 that contains fixes and all sorts of other goodies at PMA.......

Just spoke with some people at Solms concerning the 30% discount on lenses, and I asked about 1.10, the answer was " I think it will be within a couple of weeks ". That would be about the time of the PMA.

What they said about the discount letter? Some people have two, three or four letters and some people doesn't have anyone. Some people ordered the lens and have received it, and some people don't. It depends on the lens ordered, I suppose.

I think that Leica might surprise us all and show off an R10 concept/prototype.

I certainly feel that M8 fw 1.10 will be with us before the end of March.

It may be that the silence from Solms (on all fronts) is due to them not wanting to spoil the party...

You can imagine that any PR dept might be pulling their hair out watching the fallout but the bigger picture says wait until PMA. Irrespective of their normal preference for Photokina. Wishful thinking I know, but I can't help being an optimist.

( For JR .. live in Hope die in Castleton..!)

Jim

I mean i would love to see a new R digital but that hope is like me getting 20 years younger at this time. Not gonna happen. But it would be nice to know publicly what is next, maybe not all the details but just a here is what we are bringing you in next Feb 2008. Than list off about 10 features of what the new R would be. hell i would come home with a smile . I am really hoping something good comes out of this show, I thing us user base needs something positive to get exicted about.

Lenses for the M there are about 5 that i would love to see.

15mm F4 or wider and 55mm thread. Rectilinear to beat the band

24 F2

28 1.4 although tough to beat the f2 today

60 macro , yes a bloody macro at least something at 12 inches away

135 f2 APO, who needs frame lines

wow!

Guy I am surprised that you are so pessimistic about the future of the R bodies. Unless Leica is positioned to simply abandon the entire R line this doesn't make sense to me. I still think that Leica made a decision to not build another 1000 body run of R9/DMR given that a new R body is less than 2 years away and they were likely facing a major buy back from their dealers who would have been purchasing the new production run of DMR's.

With all due respect (and I do respect both your sources and your knowledge and history, it Leica abandons the R series at this point I will be happy to post a list of my R, M lenses and R and M bodies for you guys to buy. This would be so unacceptable that I would accept the minor losses of image quality from the Canons of this world as better than the abandonment of serious investment in Leica based on the leica fed assumptions that the R system was a long term commitment.

If Leica abandons the R, then goodbye to Leica. You can't build a company, even one so specialized as Leica, on rangefinders alone.

All due respect

I'll take an:

18 f2.8 (or even 3.5) at a reasonable price point (Leica would make a killing off this I think). Nobody really needed the WATE - they would have done much better with a simple wide prime.

50 2.8 macro (sorry Guy, no lines for a 60 though that is an amazing R lens. Just sold mine though...)

135 update with goggles, APO or not, whatever fstop (f2 a bit much for M I'm afraid). And semi - affordable.

And an update of the SF24 flash but nothing too crazy - I actually like the size.

I think with the 28 summicron so popular (and good) they won't expend the r&d in the f2, 1.4 range for wider lenses. Too tricky a design and would be too expensive and big of a lens. People already complain about the viewfinder being blocked by lens and/or hoods - imagine a 24mm f2! Of course if they go with a DX line of lenses then all bets are out the window but I'll doubt they'll do that anytime soon at least. Not legacy enough for Leica.

I was feeling a little down yesterday, sorry it showed here. I have both fingers and toes crossed on this though. i agree they can't do it only on the M system
