Keeping mine, not because it's the greatest, but because it's the "onlyist". The RD-1 was okay, but for me it just didn't quite cut it operationally or for critical image quality. So, for digital work using M optics the M8 is a necessary evil IMHO.

In over 30 years of using an M, this is the first one I don't trust. Leica M went from the most trusted to the least trusted... 30 years trust gone in 30 days. I most certainly would not spend another $5,000. just to feel comfortable on the job ... at least not until Leica brings the M8 back in line with their well-earned past reputation.

Over-all, there are only a few cameras I would walk out the door with alone ... my MP3 is one I would, the M8 is one I would not.

For now the M8 is relegated to a support role, and plays second fiddle to far more proven and reliable digital solutions, even if the Leica might have an edge in image quality.

M8 image quality is as good as I expected, but if the camera decides to quit in the middle of a job, image quality is a mute point. Besides, I have digital solutions no 35mm sensor camera will ever equal, so the M8 isn't in the running if ultimate image quality is the over-riding criteria anyway.

Will consider buying a second M8, when it earns that consideration, not out of blind loyality.

The thread would be shorter if you had asked who wouldn't keep it in case it could be returned for full refund...oh wait....you did.:D

Keeping.

And even if the refund included a premium would the threat be much shorter!

I bought mine on end of November. Since then no problems and magenta from time to time. (I haven't got the filters). I frecuently use to put its images on the screen and the zoom tool to see in depth how the picture grows and grows reveling the mini tiny details.

Also waiting some luck to earn enought to buy a Nocti. (The poet among the lenses).

Keeping.

Francisco.

Just out of interest; not a challenge: Is your hesitation about reliability because you had a bad experience or is it fuelled by Internet "noise" ?

I love mine and will definitely be keeping it. (Especially after dishing out the cash for those beautiful lenses). I've got a silver and love the fact that I can walk around NYC and blend in with all the tourists. I even get solicited by those tour bus people around Time Square for rides. Never happened before with my gnarly visage or carrying the Canon 1D series stuff.

On the other hand I'm keeping all my Canon stuff. I shoot a lot of birds and macro. Also use the tilt/shift features.

This is most sensibility what I ever see someone tell who is owner M8. I happy see one professionalist fotographer who sound like got rationable mind, not like little girl in love with new doll.

Blasko, the only problem I've had is the magenta one and the filters cure that - no other problems, none, nada, zilch. Mine isn't going back, in fact as I expected I haven't used my 5D since I bought the M8 - and I resent being refered to as a little girl. That was just a phase I was going through, it's long behind me now and as long as I keep taking the medication I'll be ok.

I'm barely keeping mine. I have too much invested in it now to get out without taking a huge hit. I am already spending too much, so taking a loss on what I have is out of the question. I'm locked in. I have an M8, 28mm Elmarit, 90 Elmarit, and a 15mm Voigtlander Heliar plus various accessories.

Look at it this way--is there a better alternative for me, one that meets all of my criteria? Nope. Time to make the most of it and hope for better things to come.

P.S.--Please don't beat me for my lack of total loyalty to the red dot.

OK, I'd like to alter my vote if I may. It occurred to me last night that when I first posted a) I had just been to the dentist and told that I would need yet another (5 total) crown, at $1000 each--the equivalent of an M8 body, and B) I've had huge problems with color management and haven't been able to make a good print reliably for months, so while I am irritated with all the M8 problems, I needed to step back and re-evaluate.

Last night, an acquaintance helped me correct my color management issue. All of a sudden, I could call up the 300 or so images I've shot on the M8, work on them, and really see what I was able to get with the M8. Now I see what the pro-M8 people have been saying. It really produces a remarkable image. The new 28 Elmarit has a look that is bright, yet color saturated, great contrast, and sharp as a tack. Much better than any of my old Canon zooms--and I mean much better. My 90mm Elmarit looks great too, and I'm very happy with a few of the shots made with my 15mm Voigtlander Heliar.

I am off to LA for a work assignment for a week. The camera is going with me, and I expect to have some time to hit the streets and put the M8 through its paces.

Yes, I am still waiting for 1.10, two IR filters, and more Visible Dust products to clean my sensor. But, I have to say that going for the M8 was definitely the right thing to do when it comes to images, which is what matters. I would do it again.

Steve , do you use IR filters

Hi Jim, yes. I bought the filters I neded from Germany and they work perfectly. I'm still waiting for the two Leica ones - 49mm for the Tri-Elmar, 60mm for the Nocti. It seemed sensible to order the two most expensive ones from Leica for free :-)
