jc_braconi Posted February 26, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted February 26, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) is it ? It is some days now that I see him making circles in the air looking for a prey, but it is the first time I see it stopping on a branch. The mountains are full of snow at the moment and close to the sea the weather is warmer. May be today it was tired and it let me the time to take the R8/DMR and locked on the Telyt 5.6/ 400 and using it handoff took 2 shot next I was lucky enough to have time to change the head and make two more with the 5.6/560. Next it flies away during the time I was looking at the back screen This made me a lot of adrenaline like when I am in a shooting competition. The distance was approximatively 150 m the bird is 60 cm high from its yellow feet to the top of the head, so if Doug is around, I will appreciate he can tell me what kind of bird it is. Thank you.

soo Posted February 27, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted February 27, 2012 It is definitely a hawk. Where you live determines what subspecies or variant of hawk it is. And I can't tell from your post where you live. Google hawk plus your location and you should find it. Its markings are bit different from the hawks I have near me and my field guide is local so I'm stymied.
jc_braconi Posted February 29, 2012 Author Share #5  Posted February 29, 2012 this two are similar : one is a falcon the other a sparrowhawk  Faucon crécerelle  Epervier d'Europe
leicamann Posted February 29, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted February 29, 2012 This bird is too beefy to be a Sparrowhawk...so that leaves us with the Falcons, I think whats throwing everyone is the mostly brown plummage , which suggests its a juvenile of some sort . I am going to guess a Perigrine Falcon or its close buddy the Lanner Falcon. Â Cheers,JRM

wildlightphoto Posted March 1, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted March 1, 2012 Sorry, its realy nothing other than a common buzzard (buteo buteo). Â I'm not especially familiar with european birds but my initial impression is that of a buteo, not an accipiter or falcon so my default identification would be the Buzzard, Buteo buteo.
