I played with several images yesterday and now you guys have me confused. I have ACR 4.0 and Lightroom with 3.6 and i brought up the same images in both at the same kelvin temp and made exposure chages to match and they look identical even with reds. Now can I upgrade LR 1.0 to the latest version. Also i have only one option and that is 3.6 in the calibration tab. Am I looking in the wrong place for this

Not clear Guy - which Lightroom version are you using? In LR 1 with PS CS3 installed you should have ACR 4 as default for ACR in PS, but in LR you should see a dropdown under the Camera Calibration tab in Develop module which lets you select ACR3.6 or Embedded.

That's what happens on a Mac... not sure about XP/Vista/Windoze in general...

Guy Click on the pointer next to the 3.6 and it expands to two options. Am I right to assume you are trying to maintain the calibration from ACR 4.0 or the prior release of Lightroom. Assume you would agree that that Lightroom V1.0 produces a slightly different color pallet ?

Roger I am clicking on it and nothing at all no options here. Wonder what i have going wrong here.

Just read your second post i did have the beta on this box, than got rid of it and loaded the new one . Maybe I missed a application support setting. Darn

I had the luxury of rebuilding my LR database from scratch before transitioning to 1.0, so I can confirm that everything in my library gives me the option of either embedded or ACR 3.6 in the camera calibration options. As someone else said, embedded is actually worse, but they both require tweaking.

Guy, do you do manual WB calibration in camera? I'm curious about how much of my problem is Lightroom vs the camera autoWB itself.

I believe the option in Lightroom is dependant on the camera. If the camera support is built in to acr version 2.4 that is what you will see in Lightroom. For instance when I look at the profile for images taken with my 1DMKII it shows acr 2.4 but my M8's show 3.6 (I think, not at my home machine).

I usaully just leave the camera on AWB since i usually always WB in the raw converters.

Maybe i need to see if i upgrade the camera raw plugin and that may correct it. It's very odd how this is working

Some thoughts on ACR V3.? raw and other converters.

There has been a lot of confusion about ACR and its handling of M8 files due to Adobe's RAW version changes, Lightroom Beta, Lightroom V1.0, and CS3. The older versions of ACR used Leica's embedded data and opened the file accordingly. Later versions of ACR used RAW3.6 by default, but allowed the option to switch to Leica's embedded profile. There was a post on DPReview some time ago by a "Z (is real)" who is on the Adobe RAW development team. He stated that Leica made an error in the way they write the data to the SD card and that one was better off using Adobe's 3.6 coversion, which ignored the wrong tag. He said that Adobe notified Leica about the error, but Leica has apparently not fixed this with V1.09, as the "embedded" tag still appears to be wrong. You can verify this by opening a Leica file in RAW in CS3 and changing from embedded to ACR 3.6 and see the obvious change. Leica apparently did not fix this in version 1.09. Lightroom 1.0, CS3 and CS2 with the latest RAW seem to read the files correctly.

Leica apparently got by with at least one little flaw that nobody noticed!

There is no perfect RAW converter. Each is the developer's own interpretation of what he thinks is correct. The difference in one conversion to another is no different than the rendering of one film as opposed to another.

We are very fortunate with the M8 in that we can make a shot, process it, and then change our minds. Instead of shooting color, we can make it black and white. We can virtually choose between Ilford and Kodak at will. If we don't like the result in developer X, we can try developer Y. The possibilities are only limited by the time one wants to spend on any shot. Most will find, after experimenting, that one converter will balance comfortable workflow with pleasing results, most of the time. A special shot that doesn't quite satisfy with one's normal coversion may warrant some experimenting with another converter. But flexibility after the fact is one of the best parts of digital capture.

The work on raw converters continues and Leica will probably fix their error in V1.1. We are fortunate. The best is ahead.

For what it's worth, I have now identified my personal one-size-fits-all preset settings for importing to Lightroom. My in camera settings are all "standard", except I shoot at between 0 or -1 EV depending on the situation.

1. Neutral Brightness. All my images were importing too bright. This is why all the reds were looking pink to me. The brightness slider was at +25 or something as a default. Now it's at 0 in my preset.

2. Neutral Contrast. Same deal here. I had to slide contrast down to 0 (which is not the center of the slider, BTW).

3. - 21 Saturation. Works for me. YMMV.

4. + 40 Red Primary Hue. Maybe it's just me, but it works.

5. +30 Red Primary Saturation.

6. +30 Green Primary Hue.

7. +38 Green Primary Saturation.

8. -36 Blue Primary Hue.

9. +5 Black Clipping. Alright, this one is almost purely an aesthetic choice.

10. Neutral Noise Reduction (both types).

11. +30 Sharpening.

12. Auto WB.

Obviously some of these are subjective, but it's a way better starting point than the overbrightened pinkish yellowish image coming out of the camera.

Thank you Sol for those neutral presets, I have been playing around with them and they are an excellent springboard, hope you don't mind me using them as a base camp.

Tom

Please do. I'm sure there's a better solution, but I'm still learning the intricacies of Lightroom.

Are you sure this isn't a Mac version thing?

IIRC, in the beta, and in ACR, the options to mess about with settings wasn't there on the Mac version.

Mike,

Save it as a preset and then when you import next time, select your preset under the Develop drop-down menu to apply them to the batch of incoming images.

I understand that both ACR 4.0 and LR 1.0 make use of the Adobe profile for the M8 called "ACR 3.6". This to my knowledge only indicates that Adobe last updated the M8-profile with the 3.6 release and no changes happened afterwards (I got a similar answer from Uwe a couple of days ago). Therefore the rendering should be exaclty the same as even ACR 4.0 uses for the conversion the "ACR 3.6"-profile.

Since using LR 1.0 I always got the two options "Embedded" and "ACR 3.6" but since I upgraded to the latest firmware 1.091 I noticed that on those DNGs LR 1.0 dropped the "Embedded" option and it only shows 3.6 now. So far no problem as ACR 3.6 has always been the far superior profile.

What firmware are you shooting with?
