latestart Posted February 23, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have an m8, purchased used about 9 months ago. When purchased, sent immediately to NJ for repair of lines in dng images. CLA at same time. Known flaw that was factored into the price. Has been great since until this week, last worked with no issues on 2/15. No drops or other known damaged, but I did fly with the camera in my carry on bag. Current symptoms: > shutter will not actuate when button is pressed. > menus work. I have changed settings, reset camera, viewed pictures on memory card, etc. > semi random power downs I have tested with/without lenses and with/without memory card -- though not sure it fires without a card. Firmware 2.05. I only have one battery, so have not tried switching. Does this map to known issues with M8s? It doesn't seem to match reported shutter failures... Thanks for feedback... Advertisement Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Hi latestart, Take a look here M8 failing?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 23, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2012 9 months ago? You may have gotten en extended guaranty. It is a Leica job anyway.
latestart Posted February 23, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted February 23, 2012 Purchased from a private party. Agree there may be a warranty claim. A bit surprising to have a failure as I have probably less than one thousand frames since CLA. Lots of other threads on the general topic, but seems more fragile than my cannon 5D II or even my old Nikon D200. Was hoping for a self administered cure given the repair turn-around times and desire to shoot while travelling for next 5 days. One additional symptom -- when turned off with shutter switch doesn't turn back on with same switch, but does come back on if switch is in on position and other buttons (set, menu) are pressed. Sounds like this one goes back to the mothership for love.
ho_co Posted February 24, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 24, 2012 Try a fresh battery; if that doesn't fix it, it's back to the gnomes of Solms.
WestMichigan Posted February 24, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 24, 2012 9 months ago? You may have gotten en extended guaranty. It is a Leica job anyway. Jaapv is referring to your having sent it to Leica NJ for the work you had done. It is entirely possible you got a 1 yr warranty because of it and -sincerely- checking to see if there is one and it covers the problem is a BoatLoad cheaper than not asking ;-). Bummer about your M8 flaking out on ya like that. Hope it turns out well for you. Sincerely Richard Ward
wda Posted February 24, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 24, 2012 It reads like a power issue. My instinct is to change the battery for a known fully working sample.

Guest Ming Rider Posted March 4, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 4, 2012 Good news. In my experience, Leica service is second to none and they fixed a couple of other problems they found at the same time, like fine tuning the rangefinder and changing the Power Switch Indent Spring to a more recent, firmer one (no more accidental switching)
WestMichigan Posted March 6, 2012 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2012 Hey Ming Rider, love your sig line. Very aprapo of our times, me thinks. Though, if memory serves, it is a quote from Gandhi from the thirties - I think. If you know more please advise. Thx RW Good news. latestart Posted March 14, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted March 14, 2012 Got the M8 back today -- Warranty Repair by the mothership. I haven't shot with it yet, but trust it was properly tested before return. They replaced: M8 PC Board with CCD and M8 Body leather covering (no idea why...) Still wish it hadn't broken, but I am totally pleased with the service; it was reasonably fast and there was no debate about the warranty. +1 for Leica. Guest Ming Rider Posted March 15, 2012 Share #11 Posted March 15, 2012 Good to hear. They will have changed the covering 'cos it has to be destroyed to take the body apart to change the PCB. It will feel strange for a short while having a repaired camera, as though it has been violated, or is somehow 'impure'. Don't worry though. After 10 shots, you'll feel right at home again. Happy ending. Enjoy.
