SJP Posted February 18, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) to croak (verb intransitive) - decease, die, drop dead, buy the farm, cash in one's chips, give-up the ghost, kick the bucket, pass away, perish, snuff it, pop off, expire, conk, exit, choke, go, pass. This is the second time that my M8 has developed "drive fault, shutter error" & I am depressed. First time after ca. 15.000 actuations December 2010 & now the same again, maybe 2500 extra actuations. (Note/edit: the shutter itself is fine, it stops being cocked/rewound. So it is related to the motor/relays/switches etc.) I got the camera back in March 2011, so presumably it is full warranty. Still, I am not at all happy. It is currently in transit to Dr. Solms. Anyone with a similar experience to cheer me up?
Advertisement Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Hi SJP, Take a look here M8 shutter croaked & recroaked. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hhanebeck Posted February 18, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 18, 2012 Yeap, had the same issue last year on my first day of vacation in Germany. The great thing was that I found a perfect M7 body from a collector the next day that then became my "backup" for the rest of the time. Took some of the best images I have gotten so far with this M7. Can highly recommend it as a second M body. Maybe there is a way to spend "relatively speaking" less money on a second M body and still enjoy your lenses just as much. Cheers, Chris
SJP Posted February 19, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted February 19, 2012 Indeed - I have my M2 as a fallback scenario. Maybe I should go 100% film for the next few months. It is always good to start thinking in terms of EV of a scene (15 daylight, 10-11 overcast, 5-6 indoors, -5 moonlight IIRC). On this note how many of use the happy snapper method 200 ASA film => outdoors sunny f16/250 = EV 15 overcast f5.6/250 = EV12 indoors f2.8/30 etc.
jaapv Posted February 20, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2012 My M8 did it once - it was back from Solms within the week - they did not even open up the camera. Just took off the internal bottom plate and got the plastic wobbly going again. I seems it somehow stuck itself. Out of guaranty but no charge. Maarten Posted February 23, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2012 It was a reason for me to ask Solms to install the quiet shutter in my M8: less powerful spring, less strain on the system, less problems to expect (touch wood of course). Besides: when operating your M2 again you will notice how much more vibration the original M8 shutter is generating. Solms did an excellent job, in three weeks time my M8 was ready for shipment. Pity though that the shipment took another 6 weeks, it looks like my camera was forgotten. After a phone call I received my M8 back in a week. The delay gave me the opportunity to pick up film development again after 30 years(!). It still feels the same and I enjoy scanning good old Tri-X to nice jpeg files. SJP Posted March 2, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted March 2, 2012 Mmmm - that was fast:D It is apparently unrecroacked. Leica informs me: During our tests, we found a foreign body which has found its way into the camera and has blocked the release mechanism. "Foreign body" - that sounds scary but anyway all is well & my precious is being sent back. Happy camper.
