Can a digilux 2 owner help me?

Hi,

I bought a 2nd hand LC1 and the sensor is now faulty. No problem, one would think, as Panasonic appear to be honouring ccd claims presently (but perhaps ending very soon). However, I opened up the camera to check it over and found the ccd has previously been repaired (damage to the ribbon cable). I suspect Panasonic will take one look and refuse a warrant claim due to the 3rd party repair.

So, does any d2 owner have their old broken ccd sensor module. There is an old post on the forum with a photo of a ccd that was returned with the repaired camera. I would happily pay a few pounds for this part (& postage) so I can get the camera fixed at reasonable cost.

Many thanks.

I'm not quite sure that it is quite correct to try and fool the factory - best to come clean and try to get them to honor the courtesy repair of the sensor. After all, the repair to the flex may have been done by the factory and recorded under the camera number. In that case you would make matters worse by tinkering with it yourself.

Having looked at the flex pcb (ribbon) repair, there is no chance it was done by panasonic's service partner. They would have replaced the whole ccd module.

It is also not my intention to fool the company, as the sensor has the normal fault. However, understandably, there is no way they will supply a replacement under warranty as the part has been previously repaired by a non-authorised person.

To be realistic, without a ccd warranty replacement, the camera is likely to be scrap which would be a shame. The repair cost would be in the £300-400 range, beyond the value of the camera. The part itself, is circa £250.

I do take your point but finding a broken sensor is probably the only way to save the camera.

Thanks.

You'll need to contact Panasonic and see what pans out then, if they say no then you're only option is to look for a broken model and try to repair yourself as at those prices you'll be throwing money away IMO. Panny seem to take their time replying sometimes ,perhaps a dealer will get a quicker response.

Good luck, it's a shame because the lens is a corker.

(Touches wood and strokes lucky rabbits foot etc.)

Steve: thanks for your thoughts.

Guy: thanks for the pointer. Being water damaged might make that one a potential donor (of a ccd module). I'm not much of a eBay-er though so is the fact it is a "Germany only" auction a problem or is it still possible to buy it?

The first place where water damage shows up is printed cicuits....:o

Well..., the seller is happy to send it to the uk but the cost made me think twice. However, the bidding is now over €65 which is silly. If the camera has been dropped into (salt?) water, 95% will be scrap. All the pcbs will be shorted and the lens (with motor and potentiometer rings) is probably beyond economical repair. The purchaser is getting a spare mag case, two lens caps and a lens hood.

Oh and a box too.

Jaapv also made a wise point that if the sensor has obvious water damage the service centre will not consider that a warranty issue.

Alas, I see only 4 answers to your problem :

- to wait to find another apparatus defective to try a repair

- to send your apparatus at Panasonic for repairing

- to buy another LC1 or D2 of second-hand

- nothing to make

Thanks for those leads :)

The lc1 seems overpriced to me as they are circa £250 in the uk. The d2 above, on the other hand, is a very good price and if in good condition, a price I'd pay. However buying from a classified advert far away in another country without the protection of eBay is too much risk for me :(

Ideally, I'd like to have mine repaired but it is looking like that isn't going to happen. :(

Why don't you just send it to Panasonic and see what they say? Being open and aboveboard does work from time to time you know...

Actually when I sent my Digilux2 in for the sensor replacement Leica returned me a refurb. I have a sneaky suspicion they just threw my camera into the trash without even opening it up.
