Elmarit 28mm 2.8 2nd V? Hood issues? 125011

I just secured an Elmarit lens- so far so good. It seems to be in great shape. It came to me with a hood #12501. However the hood will not mount straight on the lens? It is marked for the 21 and 28mm lens... I am wondering if this hood is for different version of the lens? Or is there some way to rotate the outer hood part on the mount so that it lines up with the small metal screw on the elmarit lens body? The red mount dot is beside the 21mm mark- if it was in front of the 28 mark I think that would be correct- but it doesn't look like I can change it? The hood appears to be one solid piece??

It looks like if I removed that screw from the lens I could mount the hood- but it wouldn't have it's catch then- and I would need to align it myself... Is there something I am missing here?

Also I am assuming this is a V2 lens? Anything interesting I should know about it?

a penny for your thoughts...

Yes, this is an Elmarit type 2 (11802) with hood 12501 which is the right fit for it (fits also Elamrit 28 type 1 and Super Angulon 21 3,4) . I don't understand why it doesn't mount correctly... the locking tabs look in standard position... I have one (for an Elmarit type 1) that fits right... tonight, at home, I'll be able to look at it directly and compare... I wonder if the issue can be on the lens'front... could you pst some pics of it, taken from front ? In theory, the front could have been dismounted for maintenance, and not properly remounted...

Hello there Luigi,

thanks for the reply. The problem is the small silver screw on the lens barrel that locks into the hood. Looking at the lens front on this screw is in the 6.45 o'clock position- whilst the hood has two cutouts top and bottom at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. I don't imagine you could reassemble the barrel and get the position of that screw so far off? Is this definitely a V2?

there is no corresponding screw on the other side- or hole for a screw. Does you version have a single screw at the 6 o'clock position?

Well, I can check my V1, but I am almost sure that the screw is at 6 o'clock... I am confirmed in my idea that the front of your lens has been "operated"... better to have the item inspected by a lab, if you are not far from... the position is surely an odd one.

And yes, it's definitely a V2... serial number matches too... barrel very similar to the V1, but the back element isn't protruding into the body like in V1 (a detail, due to the 9 elements design of the V1, which prevented it to be mounted on M5 + CL, and makes metering uncorrect on other M bodies, including M8/9)

Luigi- and JP- thanks again. It seems you must be right: I just noticed that the index mark for the aperture settings is not located at the top of the lens when mounted but at around 12.45 o'clock- it is directly opposite the screw. I can see in JP's link the index mark is supposed to be at the top of the lens in line with the focus index mark.

So it seems the front part of the lens has been incorrectly positioned. The lens seems to work fine. This defect seems highly unusual: does anyone have any idea how difficult it would be to repair this lens? There is no way the front part can be easily removed as in lenses for use with visoflex?

Looking on the webs for a description of disassembling the Elmarit I couldn't find one- but I did find this description of the 40mm summicron. Apparently it is similar. I am not sure I entirely understand the description- but is it correct that if I unscrew the locking ring on the rear element the entire optical assembly- and f-stop assembly- can then be repositioned? Or am I missing something?

Does anyone have experience working on these lenses?

here is a link to the description (I might also clean my summicron- it sounds easy!)

Jaques,

I recall having a similar problem with the 28mm Elmarit and a 35mm Summicron. And I recall that loosening the retaining ring allowed me to center the lens. Just make sure that you have a proper spanner so that you do not mark or damage the ring.

The problem definitely is related to this - often the retaining ring becomes loose and mounting / dismounting the lens hood makes it worse.

Good luck,

Jan
