As sure as eggs is eggs, people will be clamoring for the M11 and so on ad infinitum. All tech stuff, not just cameras, are part of this out-of-control spiral. Unless you buy something that is already out of date that uses proven reliable technology and gives you the results you like -- existing digital cameras, film cameras, hi-fi componentry, for example. Newer isn't always better... or you'll never be satisfied.

Would dedicated Leica shops (only in major cities) be able to secure preferential stocks of new products? Imagine long queues for the latest Leica products, as with Apple stores and iPhone and iPad, etc... ;)

As a B.S.ing US President once said under oath, "That depends on what is, is".

Why would someone want to buy a camera that they have not seen and don't know the specs of? Are we so sure the M10 is going to be a better camera than the M9?

I'm thinking of the Ford Edsel, with push button transmission

I'm thinking of "New" Coke

I'm thinking of BMW's first iDrive in the 7-Series

I'm thinking of the M5 and it's "revolutionary" built in light meter

I think it's far from a foregone conclusion that Leica will not screw up the next M.

If I was desperate to be the top of the list, I would build a relationship with a well known and sizeable dealer. Then a month before any announcement see if they would take a refundable deposit to be top of their Que.

Or keep your eyes peeled and if and when they announce phone up and do the same.

Either way no guarantee you will be first, if it exists. But a dealer will have a greater influence (Not much though) than you.

First come fist serve and money talks come to mind.

don't you think that if an M10 is September was true there would be some beta versions around being used -- and that some intrepid reporter would've pick up on it by now?.

How many sightings of the M9 were there? The only one I'm aware of was when a forum member was using an M9 disguised as an M8 and a stranger noticed that the viewfinder was full frame. The tester managed to talk his way out of it and the stranger went away none the wiser.

Even if you buy an early one and decide it's not for you it would be _very_ easy to sell on at a profit while they are in short supply.

I confess I really don't understand the compulsion to be the first kid on the block with the latest and greatest. It's why it amuses me. I understand it still less when nothing is known of the new toys capabilities, appearance, handling, price or any one of a half-dozen datum points that could be deal-breakers in the real world.

If the M10 is wonderful when it is first announced then it will still be wonderful in a few days, weeks or months when supplies are available. Oh wait, I forgot, by then the compulsive will be focussed instead on the latest and greatest from Nikon... or Canon... or...

Regards,

Bill

Before the M9 was released, lots of mules were in the hands of beta testers. All of whom signed NDAs with Leica, so can and will not talk about them to forums like this one.

A similar band of brothers will probably be testing M10s now, all of which will have M9 engraved on the front. And no one will talk about them.

Which is as it should be.

I have a digital Leica with M9 engraved on the front! How can I tell if it really is an M10?

The last two cameras I bought from Leica as soon as they came out were the CM and the M7 .85. Both were swopped out due to power problems.

I honestly think and hope that the M10 will be a game-changer for Leica in the same way as the M3 and the M8 were, but I equally hope that it is not the M8 experience all over again. Disruptive technology is high risk and comes at a price. I'll let others tie up their money on waiting lists and take the pain before I make a move.

In the meantime, I tend to want what I have, rather than have what I want. ;)

Why the piss-take? It's just unnecessary.

This is a legitimate question, and dozens of forum members will have plans to drop deposits with dealers so as to be the first kid in the block with a new M10 when September comes.

c'mon.... this is a wind up...... I cannot believe he is serious....

read his blog ..... he's been buying cameras since he was 8 ....

if he doesn't know how to get hold of a new camera by now ahead of the field he never will

...... and as for putting down a deposit on a mythical non-existent camera of unknown specification that may or may not appear at some indeterminate time in the future ....

Deposit????:eek: When the M9 came out I had my local dealer calling me whether I wanted the first camera that came in. And I had a deposit-less camera in my hands from ffordes that I ordered a few weeks before (because of the passport) a couple of days later.... I got the first M8 sold in Holland without deposit as well.

I would not even consider paying anything for a waiting list. If asked, I walk away.

Here is an honest answer. You have no chance. I doubt that dealers with limited allotments will give out the "first in" new M10's to anyone with a deposit. Dealers have favored customers who drop tons of money on Leica gear, or who for other reasons are at the head of the list. When it is announced, put down your deposit and be prepared to wait.
