andybarton Posted February 12, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted February 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a problem with the Manual Focus lock not being able to be unlocked, as recorded in a separate thread. Â I am also finding it impossible to get the green 11 point focus indicators to show and certainly cannot move the groups around. According to the manual, holding down the Delete/Focus button for a couple of seconds is supposed to bring up the green indicators. All I get is a list of focus modes. Â I am sure that this is just newbieness, but I'd be pretty close to taking this back if I didn't know that with perseverance the camera can take good photographs. Â So glad I bought it now and not one week before a holiday.
Advertisement Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Hi andybarton, Take a look here The X1 is a frustrating camera. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted February 12, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 12, 2012 I had a little play with one. Lovely and compact, quality feel to it too, but I just wouldn't get on with it. It seemed a bit 'laggy' overall and yes it was the updated version. But I agree the images are top quality. Maybe it's something you learn to live with. Â Are you sure there's not some problem with yours Andy?
nippa Posted February 12, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted February 12, 2012 It sounds like you have a defective unit. As you've reinstalled v2.0 and I guess done a reset there's not much more you can do. You seem to be pressing the right buttons
andybarton Posted February 12, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted February 12, 2012 It's chronically slow, but you have to make allowances for that. Â What I am finding frustrating is that it just doesn't work as the manual says it should, even when set to Factory Settings. Â I'm thinking about taking it back. Not sure if I'll get my money back, though.
ECliffordSmith Posted February 13, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted February 13, 2012 Hi Andy, Â It does sound like there is something wrong with your camera as the focus points should change just as stated in the manual. Â Regarding the performance I can only agree. Most of my photography is quite static and I have the time to focus manually but this weekend my nephew had his first birthday and the auto focus was not up to the job, even in quite good light with high contrast. I ended up being in manual focus mode and got quite a lot of decent shots but at larger print sizes they would fall apart. Â There is a trade off between being a very compact camera with potentially very high image quality and generally slow performance across the operational board. I can understand that this is not acceptable to a lot of people.
wda Posted February 13, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted February 13, 2012 I have just posted in your other X1 thread. Sorry to hear the catalogue of frustration. Uncharacteristic, I'm sure. Swap for a new replacement.

stevelap Posted February 16, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted February 16, 2012 I must admit I was surprised to read that you'd bought an X1 Andy. I don't know why I was surprised, perhaps because you were/are a DMR/R man. Â I briefly tried one a while ago but couldn't get on with it at all......slow operation with odd controls and user interface, not to mention the fixed lens and lack of viewfinder........although I'll admit it is a handsome, well made camera with a certain charm. Â Is it at least possible that, given your frustrations to date, it just isn't the camera for you? Perhaps the upcoming Leica CSC might be.......... Â Non of the above is any of my business of course and good luck with whatever you decide to do:).
andybarton Posted February 16, 2012 Author Share #9 Â Posted February 16, 2012 I was a DMR man and I am a D700 man, and a film M man and a Hasselblad man. Â I used to be a CM man, until I sold it, and the X1, now that it is a mature product and others have blazed a trail through the teething problems, should be an ideal replacement for that. Â It doesn't mean that I would give up one of the other camera systems for it, although it was funded by the sale of my M7, which was surplus to requirements. robert blu Posted February 16, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted February 16, 2012 Everyone who reads this forum knows the pro and the contra of the Leica x1. Excellent photo quality and some limitations in operating modus. But I think your one has some additional problem and should be replaced. Dom't give up too quick, for me (as the only digital camera I own) is an excellent companion to my m7 and I guess could be an excellent companion to you other gear as well. robert
Archiver Posted February 21, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted February 21, 2012 Andy, I just bought a X1 and had the same issue. Then I found this: Â - press Focus/Delete once. The menu of focus modes comes up. - select 11 Points or 11 Points H. Now press the centre OK button to confirm. - hold Focus/Delete down and the 11 focus points will appear. Move them and press OK to confirm. Â The X1 puzzled me a bit because you have to press OK in order to confirm the setting. Most other digital cameras allow you to navigate to the desired setting and press Back, and the setting will be as you set it. In the X1 you have to press OK. Â Meanwhile I am rather perturbed by the repeated ticking noise that the camera makes as it is adjusting exposure. No other camera I have used, and I have used a LOT, does it this loudly! Paul J Posted February 23, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted February 23, 2012 Just tested the function on mine, which I didn't know existed (i really should read the manuals more often!) and it works A-OK on mine.
andybarton Posted February 23, 2012 Author Share #13 Â Posted February 23, 2012 Thanks for the advice - I will re-test later. Â If it doesn't work, I will probably just ignore it
