Rare lenses

Hey guys!

Just had a recent discussion with one of my buddies and I was shocked to hear about the rise in price for a couple of lenses. For example, I had acquired a 35 Summicron V1 just the year before and at least locally I can get offers of about twice the original price and in Japan, it has gone to 2.5 times my original.

Just wanted to ask if there were any other lenses experiencing this phenomenon.

Thanks! :)

....if they do this every year.

Who is "they"?

I understood your question was about second hand lenses (Summicron version 1).

So "they" can only mean every private seller who demands high prices, and every buyer who pays them. That's called market.

The so called "shortage" of new lenses from Leica is nothing else than asking for some patience as you don't get lenses immediately but have to wait some months- in some cases shorter in some longer.

Lack of patience - one might also call it greed - is the main instigating factor for rising prices on the second hand market.

The way I read it, he was refering to new lenses, they being Leica themselves. The TO was asking about used ones.

While I feel there is truth in your statement (waited patiently 16 months for the 35 FLE), there are definitely additional forces at work, such as the success of the M9. IMO, lack of patience/greed has aggravated the underlying issue. If the M9 had not been successful, I doubt lens prices would be where they were today- albeit higher, but not at some of the insane prices we see today.

My understanding is that Leica expected to sell approximately 1.5 new Leica lenses per new M9 sold. I fact the demand for lenses has been approx. 3.5 new Leica lenses per new M9 sold.

I certainly exceeded the average, let alone what Leica expected, buying 7 new lenses (and only one 2nd hand) for my M9*...and I'm not buying any more...

That's about 7 months of lens production so blame me for the worldwide shortage:D

Well I sort have gotten a reply. But I think it's a bit off from what I was thinking. I do know that official prices have gone up and so on. But I'm actually referring to the older classic lenses from the 50s-90s. I mean we've all seen the astronomical rise of the noctilux 1.2. So what do you foresee as the future "noctilux1.2-like"?

Perhaps Noculix f1.0. Keep in mind some people prefer the Mandler look of rendition.
