AFAIK there will be only the 2,0/28 in the future.

I dont't know, if there will be a cheaper one as an entry lens for the digital M, but I dont't think so.

Andreas

If you think 35mm is the new normal lens, going even slightly wide with the 28mm Summicron is expensive and that suggests a place for a 2.8.

With that new normal standard (and ignoring the 135mm), there are 9 "long" lenses but only 3 "wide" lenses.

Seems clear to me where the development effort should be focussed, though much will depend on what the viewfinder supports.

If Leica doesn't offer a sensible series of lower prices lenses, Zeiss and CV will be more than happy to oblige.

LCT,

Surprised that you miss the 2.8, since I'm the culprit who talked you into the 28/2.:) Just NO comparison in image quality. The old 28/2.8's were not even moving on eBay. No reason to continue production...

Mark,

Somehow I doubt pros and advanced amateurs will buy a $5,000 body and then mount Cosina lenses on it just to save a few bucks. :) Zeiss lenses may be fine for lots of things and lots of folk, but they make a different image than the latest Leica ASPH glass. For one thing, the color palette is often different, and the correction of a 28/2 in particular is just fabulous, sharp to the corners and almost imune to veiling glare. In this case you get what you pay for..., even if YOU are going to use it as a 37mm, a real waste IMO.:)http://gallery.leica-users.org/Range-Rover-Sport-Launch/LUG128 Just ask LCT about his findings with this lens on his RD-1...

I am having a hard time deciding what to buy for the M8 . issue is i have almost everything for the R 15 3.5 i am selling now, but have the 19,28,35,50,80 luxes than 100 apo 180f2 and 280 f4. Now i want the M as a backup and stand alone setup . So i was thinking the new 15mm when it comes 21 or 24 but leaning at the 24 not sure though than 50 lux and 75 summricon . or go 21, 35 and 75.

leica from what i was told discontinued the R 24 and the R 180-205 also. But not sure this has happened yet

William, don't deny the quality of the 28/2 - I have one - but just as there's a case for a 35/2, I think there's a case for a reworked 28/2.8 ASPH to continue the trend and fill a hole. If Leica can justify 4 50mm lenses, surely they can justify 2 28's?

Agree with William of course ;) in that the 28/2 is a fantastic lens on the R-D1 but it lacks an entry lens for the digital M to play the role of the 50/2 for M cameras.

Could the price of the 35/2 asph be reduced to $1,500 for this purpose?

i definitely plan to use some VC and older Canon lenses on the Digital M. these lenses are incredible value for the performance they deliver. i think i remember reading some Puts lens reviews where even he remarks on how close the performance of the VC equivalents are to Leica glass. so... is the performance difference in a 28mm Ultron and a 28mm Summicron worth $2500 usd?

in my case that $2500 dollars is the difference in me even being able to afford a Digital M. so i will be slumming with the Ultron.. haha.

Digital M users will still use Asian lenses of course but it's not a reason for Leica to forsake their youngest aficionados and all those who can't afford to pay $2,000 or $3,000 for a single lens.

There is indeed some room for more affordable glass like a new Elmarit 28/2.8 and/or a new Summaron 35/2.8 perhaps.

Guy, The new website does not list either of these lenses. I hope they are coming out with a new 24mm as the gap from 19mm to 28mm is huge. Maybe an ASPH?

They always do this, The old one is never discontinued until the stock is sold out. I`ll bet they never made one since the intoduction of the 28 f2.0.

75 F1.4 will suddendly be gone next. Wait and see.

I have watched them do this for decades.

My understanding from a leica rep is they do make a lens in groups not individual. What they do is determine how many the market needs lets say 200 of of the same lens , than the whole team works on these 200 than moves on to the next lens build. Which makes sense, they can do a whole run and than move on. what i was told no more run's on these lenses and just let the stock run out

A new 2.8/28 will not be more cost efficient to make (it will need roughly the same mount and almost as many lens elements), hence the price difference to the 2/28 won't be big. Actually, those are the reasons which made Leica discontinue the "old" 2.8/28. So don't hope for a new one anytime soon.

Still present on the old site, the Elmarit-M 28/2.8 has disappeared from the new one. Will we see a smaller and cheaper one as an entry lens for the digital M?

Unlike Canon and Nikon, Leica has generally relied on the used market for entry level lenses.

It would mark a major turn if they decided to produce a more inexpensive line.

Doing so would also raise the question of whether this is a cheap wide-angle for the film cameras or a cheap 'normal' for the digital, possibly sending mixed signals.

Interesting idea to follow.

LCT,

William after spending that amount of money on a body I'll have to save all the money I can :-)

SInce I already have CV 21mm and 28mm lenses, I'd expect the next lens I'd buy would be a Leica or Zeiss 21mm for the extra stop over the CV. After that perhaps a 28mm Summicron to replace the f1.9 CV 28mm.

Exciting times ahead!

Remember the little gems for Leica CL: Summicron-C 40/2 and Elmar-C 90/4.

They were less expensive than the Sumicron 35 or the Tele-Elmari but Leica did no compromise on quality with them.

The 90/4 is sharper and shows less flare than the 'thin' Tele-Elmarit and the 40/2 is so good that i own 3 copies of it and it became my standard lens on the R-D1 some 30 years after.

Leica can do the same for the digital M: small, excellent and more affordable lenses IMHO.

In any case an entry lens is necessary to replace the 'cron 50/2 due to the crop factor.
