audidudi Posted February 25, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 25, 2007 Question: Has anybody compared the quality of the images taken with the Digilux 2 to those from the Digilux3. I'm not asking for the numbers; those I can read for myself. I'm asking for the " look" andd the " feel". Â The only Leica I own is a C-Lux 1 (an unwanted Christmas present I bought from a co-worker) but I do own both an LC1 and an L1 and shoot only RAW with them, which should minimize the differences between the Japanese and German versions, so perhaps I'm qualified to comment? Â I'll probably get some flack for this, but to the extent the comparison can ever be apples-to-apples given the file-size differences, etc., I prefer the LC1's images to the L1's images. The highlights seem to blow out a little easier, but the colors strike me as more accurate and natural and, more importantly, the images seem sharper, crisper, and more three-dimensional. (Of course, as pointed out in another thread, I may or may not have a defective L1 -- or a defective lens, at any rate -- so my conclusions may differ from others.) dugby Posted February 25, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 25, 2007 I own both D2 and L1 .... ( and D1 and D-LUX2) Â I'd have to say that my D2 takes superb shots but within a very narrow set of operating parameters. So long as the light is good (day and flash-light restrictions)......I love my D2. Keep the shutter speed above about 1/30 and the images are ever so sharp, clear, beautiful....the leica glow is there and I smile with high satisfaction when I see the printed output. Â The L1 produces the same (and better) images as above, but has a much broader set of operating parameters, OIS provides the ability to shoot a much slower speeds, I've posted many images at 6/10th sec which are beautiful.......... Â But I still feel a bit dissatisfied with this L1 camera...... I thinks it's: a) mirror slap noise (the D2 is absolutely silent....I love this stealthy camera) heavy weight 1100g versus 705g for D2 c) larger size of L1, maybe 20% larger than the D2 Â I've resigned myself to owning both for their different abilities...... Clearly for Leica, the step to 4/3 format, interchangeable lenses, OIS has been a difficult child-birth, but a necessary one. Â I think in hind-sight, if I didn't have the wonderful experiences of my D2, ownership/useage of the D3 / L1 would be a lot easier, as I wouldn't know first-hand just how good the D2 is. Â From a touchy-feely perspective, the D2 feels very good, lightweight and slightly plastic-like. Whereas the L1 feels like a Steely-Precision instrument, much like my cousin's M6. After handling the L1......and then the D2,......I prefer the feel of the L1, but it's oh so much heavier. Â But the D3 / L1 is an allday and everday camera,..... whereas the D2 shines best only during parts of those days...

A fair assessment, as darkness is no friend to the LC1/D2 due to the extra noise present as you move away from ISO 100.  Conversely, the L1 is still comfortable at ISO 200 (and less so at ISO 400, approaching ghastly by ISO 1600) and better still, thanks to the OIS, you can continue to shoot at ISO 100 for two, maybe three stops longer... MP3 Posted February 26, 2007 Share #5  Posted February 26, 2007 Panasonic and Leica can certainly revive D2 by putting out a D2-P just with,  1) Sensor with Fuji F30 performance - usable ISO1600  2) Ample RAW buffer  3) Shorter shutter lag  Everything else is already good enough in this class. They can surely sell loads of it.  Cheers Matthew
Riley Posted February 26, 2007 Share #6  Posted February 26, 2007 i think dugby has it right and the files he has put up here verify that position  moreover, the fact that D3 is a part of a system, (4/3) adds to the flexibility of an already useful platform, where the extended play on a D2 just isnt possible D2 is a lovely but terribly flawed camera; D3 deals with these flaws in a precise and uncompromising way, perhaps too uncompromising .. because i do find it odd, that where so many loved the D2, D3 doesnt seem to attract the same appreciation  >Michael I know that you are right, Ive often wondered about the viability of tearing the two cameras apart and attempting just that . But in the end I think the 4/3 will come out on top which makes that kind of surgery rather pointless. Perhaps somewhere in the future is another D2/something, or a mini M8 (M8 over 2) but frankly I dont see that sort of wisdom being bandied about in any meaningful way. So it goes
