jsjxyz Posted February 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My 75 cron now works in perfect condition, no back or front focus whatsoever. Someone told me that if I want to upgrade to 6 bit, leica might need charge additional fee on top of the 6bit adapter installation. Is that so? If i am not mistaken when I update my 75lux to 6bit, silently Leica actually readjust the lens shift to normal without additional fee, but that was 4 years ago. delander † Posted February 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2012 I bought a used 90mm Elmarit M which I sent to Solms for 6-bit coding, no extra charged for re-adjusting the lens. A great lens and my example focuses perfectly. Jeff
kdriceman Posted February 2, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2012 I just sent my 90 Tele-Elmarit to New Jersey for 6 bit coding.... They are charging me extra for a CLA.
cbretteville Posted February 2, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2012 I just sent my 90 Tele-Elmarit to New Jersey for 6 bit coding.... They are charging me extra for a CLA. A CLA is something different and a lot more comprehensive. The adjustment done during 6-bit coding only deals with the lens' focus. Carl
Knorp Posted February 2, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 2, 2012 That's right, I wanted my 75'lux 6-bit coded but my dealer warned me that Leica will charge additional costs (€225 or so) on top of the regular coding fee. He had some dispute with them as Leica is not communicating openly. Not sure how this ended, though.
StephenPatterson Posted February 2, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2012 My silver chrome 90 Elmarit M was 6-bit coded by Leica NJ in December for the standard $230 plus shipping. The lens arrived with a test/calibration certificate at no extra charge.
macusque Posted February 2, 2012 Share #7 Posted February 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sent my M9 + 35 lux asph I + 75 lux + 135 Apo for 6bit coding (not the 135) and focus calibration. Over a month turntime, total cost 1000€... and back home the lenses weren't still spot on... sometimes I just hate this jewelry brand.
delander † Posted February 2, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2012 On my lens (second post) they changed the mount, so that would require at least checking the focus. Jeff
tgray Posted February 2, 2012 Share #9 Posted February 2, 2012 In my experience with Leica NJ, they charge one fee for the coding and another for any adjustments on the lens. I sent in a 75 Summilux for a new hood, and also asked them to check it because the focus was tighter than my other lenses and I wasn't sure if it was normal. They charged me an extra $175 for the 'checking' and nothing was really different when I got it back, nor did they report any problems. I guess they calibrated the focus, but I wasn't having problems with that beforehand.
Deeman Posted February 2, 2012 Share #10 Posted February 2, 2012 Hi All, Solms tried to charge me a fee of more than 400 Euro to code and 'adjust' my 50mm Summicron Version IV. I did the job with total success myself, using the Match Technical coding kit available from Robert White. Here is one small tip: as well as using a black pen for the appropriate marks, you need to use a Tippex Shake & Squeeze pen to fill in the screw head on the mount within the coding area, otherwise the camera reads the screw-head as a black code mark. jsjxyz Posted February 2, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted February 2, 2012 My dealer also suggest me not to upgrade due to the potential burden of cost.
Hank Taylor Posted February 3, 2012 Share #12 Posted February 3, 2012 All my lenses for my M9 now are not 6 bit coded. I don't mine setting them manually. My question is this, what do you get for your money besides having a lens that will be identified and set automatically? Hank

My question is this, what do you get for your money besides having a lens that will be identified and set automatically? Hank Ah, well...you basically hit all the highlights. Not having to manually code, which is not necessary with the 90 except for sorting in Lightroom. Having the lens checked and calibrated was nice. Having the Leica test certificate, as well as factory 6-bit coding definitely helps the resale value, but since I will not be selling it that point is pretty silly. Mainly I had my 90 coded because it was my only lens that wasn't...

Sure you can send the lens to Solms, but NJ is less expensive, there are no international shipping or customs issues, and the technicians are equally proficient. cbretteville Posted February 3, 2012 Share #17 Posted February 3, 2012 Last lens I had coded was a 90/2, in May 2010. It cost me approx €240 including shiping both ways by the local distributor, their handling fee and Norwegian (ridicilous) 25% VAT. Carl

And did you ask them to check the focus or did they take the initiative? Thanks David I no longer have the receipt but it was 4 years ago. I sent it to Leica Milton Keynes where some 6-bit coding could be done but this lens could only be done in Solms. I did not ask for the lens to be adjusted after coding, I assumed that they could hardly send back a bad focusing lens. I think they changed the mount, but they did a great job, it looks like any other coded lens. The cost was not exhorbitant (for Leica) about €130?. I seem to remember there was a price list at the time. My 90mm Elmarit-M is probably my best buy as far as a Leica lens goes, £595 used from a Leica dealer but in mint condition. wattsy Posted February 3, 2012 Share #20 Posted February 3, 2012 If my lens had cost €240, I might not have had it done. Quite. It was £75 when I had a 35 Summicron coded in 2007 (done at MK whilst I waited).
