Hi guys, I have a leica M9 which I got a year ago (well 13 months ago) but never downloaded the free lightroom that came with the camera as I had lightroom 2 at the time.

My computer failed on me about 3 months ago and I have finally got round to having enough cash to get a new one but what I wanted to know is how long have I got to still download lightroom and is it worth hanging on a couple of months as lightroom 4 will be released by then most prob any thoughts guys ?

You can download LR3 at any time. The product key that you received with the camera does not expire -- it will work to activate the LR3 download whenever you wish to. Whenever LR4 becomes available, since you have LR2 (and LR3 if you activate it), you should be eligible to download the lower-cost upgrade version of LR4.

I don't know for sure, but I think if you have the serial number and TAN number from your documentation, that when you register your M9 on the Leica website, the download should be available until used. I do not recall seeing anything about a time limit. I do not use Lightroom, but if a new version will soon be available, I would probably wait.

It would be nice to think that if you haven't used the code then you'll get LR4, but I'm not sure if that will happen. I would guess that the version you'll get is based on the date you register the camera. Unfortunately that means I'll have 2 LR3 licences I don't need.

I'll find out in March I suppose.

I registered my M9 when LR3 was newly released, but before Leica was supplying LR3 activation codes. I contacted Leica first, to make sure I'd be eligible for the LR3 code, the answer was yes, as long as I never downloaded and activated using the LR2 code. When Leica started supplying LR3 codes, I got my LR3 code.

Thanks jwr50, thats great if it does not expire, might wait until lightroom 4 comes out which shouldn't be long in that case.

I'm not sure the product key will work to download LR4. You may have to use they key to download LR3 first, then pay the upgrade fee to download the newer version of LR4.

It will not expire, i had a computercrash and lost my LR and used the download already 2 times. I sendcLeica my story and asked them polite if there was a solution for my problem.

They replied my mail that the had reset my download, so i can download again (2x).

Good service!

  • 3 months later...

I attempted twice last night to download Lightroom 4. In both cases download ended prematurely. I emailed Leica US and asked them to reset my download counter. I am waiting for a reply. I am glad to hear they have done it in the past.

You should be able to download it directly from ADOBE's site and simple enter the key you got from Leica.

If you have the serial number (Leice emails it) you can download directly from Adobe (the trial version unlocks with the serial)... in that sense the 'two times download' seems a bit silly... Of course, if Leica did not send you a serial yet, you'll have to wait for them to respond. But the trial runs for 30 days, so you can already get started...
