Advertisement Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Hi Flyfisherman, Take a look here Screw mount lens on M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jdlaing Posted January 24, 2012 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2012 If I fit an old screw mount summarit onto my M8 with a adapter, will the metering still function? I believe so. Metering is by body and not lens on M8.
WestMichigan Posted January 24, 2012 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2012 If I fit an old screw mount summarit onto my M8 with a adapter, will the metering still function? As has been noted above, the metering will function just fine. There are two ways to explain why this is so with your M8. a- the metering system is simply a sensor pointed at the shutter blades to measure how much light is reflecting off them. (To slightly over simplify where and how it does it's job) That complete subsystem functions independently of what lens is or isn't mounted on the camera. b- there isn't a way for a lens to communicate electronically with an M8. For that matter it's the same for an m8.2, m8u, m9, and an mp9, as well. This means the Metering System has to operate independently of anything to do with the lens because of this. The only info a lens 'can' give the camera to use which is sort of electronic is via the 6bit code of black and white dots that are in the lens mount and the only info they provide is a pointer to a list of Leica Lenses the camera uses for filling out the exif part of image files, to compensate for vignetting issues if needed, and to compensate for uv/ir filter issues if set to do so. Hope this helps. Richard in Michigan p.s. If you get an interesting image or two from your ltm lens, maybe share it in the Old Glass and the M8 thread we've got running in this part of the forum. tobey bilek Posted January 24, 2012 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2012 Works fine. I did a bunch last Christmas that way. The only problem is finding a UV/IR filter in E41. Tungsten light is not really good on the M8 with an unfiltered lens. Sun/flash is workable. I bet B+W would make one for you .They have custom made many for me and the price is normal for that size range.

I had one, 1952 Summarit, just sold it; i got a (rare) 41-49 step up adapter and then used a standard 49mm UV/IR filter, and a standard 49mm hood. worked perfectly
