ksporry Posted January 23, 2012 Share #1  Posted January 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got my eye on 3 wide angle lenses from voigtlander. 12mm, 15mm, and 21mm. I'm using an M8.2 and an epson R-D1s. Both have cropped sensors. In the near future ill get myself a fuji x-pro1, also a crop sensor. So, the wide angle becomes less wide with either if those cameras. The 12mm is interesting as its truly v wide angle, but does it outperform the 15mm skopar that is supposed to beat Leica in performance? The 21 is more mainstream on the cameras I use it on, making it 28-32mm at that angle I could choose to bring my fuji x100, so I'm not convinced on that one. Plus, From what i heard it Is subject to Quality variations, making selection and testing necessary. But then 12 and 15 are awfully close in focal length, making it a little hard to justify one in addition to the other. The 12 should have less problems with colour shift on the m8.2 than on the m9, let alone on the epson. But he 15 appears to have better performance from what I read so far. In slr world I used to have a 17-40mm fr a 5d camera, mwhich came out cool, but with the 15 mm, giving 20-22mm, that idleness disappears a bit. I guess I'm mostly torn between the 12 and the 15mm  Anyone care to provide his/her opinion?
Advertisement Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Hi ksporry, Take a look here Which wide angle voigtlander?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted January 23, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted January 23, 2012 I own or have owned all three. The 21 I replaced with a Zeiss, as you mentioned I had a good chrome one that I replaced with a black which wasn't as good. The Zeiss is a great lens, even if it is a lot more voluminous than the CV. Â The 12 and 15 I've kept are the older LTM mounts. I had the new RF coupled 15, but sold it. The beauty of the old mounts is their diminutive size. Â I use the 15 a lot more than the 12. I find the 15 works well on both the M6 and M8 and don't mind the lens not being RF coupled. For the price the CVs are good deals, and you should be able to pass them on if you decide the lens wasn't for you. Carl
Erik Gunst Lund Posted January 23, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted January 23, 2012 Three different focal lengths - three different lenses... There are lot of threads on these lenses here, use search 21mm you can use the viewfinder in the M8 12 and 15 'needs' an external finder...
ksporry Posted January 23, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted January 23, 2012 The need of a viewfinder for the 12 and 15, is a non-issue. But I guess best look at what the 12 and 15 look like, so I'll look around for some pics taken with those. Â One thing that tickles my curiosity, is what people think of kenrockwell's reviews. He seems, quite literally, bluntly direct. Although I have no doubt about his skills and knowledge, his relatively emotional way of reporting, makes me wonder about how biased his reviews are, and therefore I wonder how useful his statements are. So far he seems to think that eg certain lenses are outright brilliant, whilst others are overpriced paperweights. Neither seems 100% accurate to me... bocaburger Posted January 23, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted January 23, 2012 This from my own experience with those lenses with R-D1 and M8. Â On the R-D1 I found that the 12 and 21 worked well, the 15 less so. There was quite a bit of falloff with the 15, and it was uneven enough that a symmetrical correction such as was available in PS and via Pano-tools, was an incomplete solution. I don't know if Cornerfix would solve it better, but it wasn't available at that time. Â On the M8, all three lenses worked well, however both the 12 and 15 in LTM versions needed jury-rigging for the UV filter. Coded as a WATE and using the 16mm setting, the M8 firmware cleaned up the cyan corner drift of the 15, but was inadequate for the 12. One, and perhaps the best solution was to leave it uncoded and use Cornerfix. However I found it easier to use a B+W 489 filter (vs the 486 UV-IR-cut) which took care of the IR contamination and did not cause any cyan corner drift. It does cost (I think) a third of a stop of light, and it does impart a faint overall cast toward the green side, but that was one click in the raw developer vs running the files through a separate program. Â The 21 performed very nicely on both cameras, on the M8 coded as a 21-ASPH or the 21 setting of the WATE coding. Â Note that if you ever intend using the 15 or 21 on an M9 in the future, along with the M8.2, you'll want to set the lens detection on the M9 to MANUAL and select the 21 pre-ASPH, as the M8 codings don't work well for red-edge. gvaliquette Posted January 23, 2012 Share #6  Posted January 23, 2012 Hello, ksporry  Although it is for the M9, you may want to look at this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/216909-cv-12mm-m9.html  Guy
chounws Posted June 18, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm using M8.2 too, the v2 12mm Voigt' become 16mm which very wide.. See sample here..http://www.pbase.com/chounws3/image/144115737/large
peter_n Posted June 21, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted June 21, 2012 I've only used the 15mm, first in LTM mount and now with M bayonet. Both are excellent but the M bayonet version does take filters, an advantage to me. I've read that the 12mm is consistently considered to be an optically better lens, but I've no interest in either 12 or 21mm focal lengths so can't comment on the other two. I've used the 15 exclusively on film bodies but I'm about to use it on an APS-C digital body so we'll see what it looks like at an effective 22.5mm FL. The ability to focus will come in handy there.
