sabears Posted January 14, 2012 Share #21 Posted January 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Which source do these figures come from? Also, alotted serial numbers do not equal actually produced lenses. The Gnomes of Solms did not suddenly discover in 1993 that they had the later ASPH lens on hand. They must have known some time before that a lens was coming that they could produce much more economically than with the old manually-controlled grinding process for the aspherical surface. After all, Leica took an active part in the development of the lens moulding process, which cannot have been done during a coffee break. The incentive to continue production of the old lens, which they probably lost money on, must have petered out before 1993. The old man from the depths of his armchair Sources are various, even our LeicaWiki , see http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/35mm_f/1.4_Aspherical_Summilux-M Even if, as I've remembered, not all the 4000 were actually done, we have thousands of lenses out... not so rare. Leica told me years ago that the last batches were done with the spare parts they had, real production was stopped before because it was deemed unprofitable. I would believe that. Strange are the ways of collectors – and also the items they collect. The old man who collects facts

Interesting and intriguing for collectors / speculators : a late s/n can be highlighted as "one of the made with spares !" ... Same happened to the last famous Norton Commando... factory was bankrupted and the warehouse of spare parts was emptied assemblying some dozens... frank_dernie Posted July 6, 2012 Share #27 Posted July 6, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Interesting. The Aspherical is my favourite and most used lens. I did buy a second one when they stopped making them in case I needed to replace the one I use all the time. It is still sitting unused in its box. Probably valuable if what is being written here is anything to go by. I briefly compared mine at f1.4 with the later ASPH. version. Mine was a touch sharper, at least in the center where the subject was in focus!
