After boredom with my Canon 1D 4 and lenses decided I to again try M series after a brief flirtation with M8/8.2 ... Part ex´d my canon kit for a M9 black with Nokton 50 F/1.1 and 35 f/1.2 .. pleased with both but miss a smaller everyday lens so am considering selling one of my voigtlanders and buying a smaller less light strong Leica .. questions is what should I go for on a tight budget ?

Most pleased with the 35m f1.2 II but will consider all advice

Hi David, welcome to the Forum. When you say smaller everyday lens, I assume you're thinking in the 35mm to 50mm range?

If I've understood you correctly, and as budget is an issue, I would suggest the Leitz 40mm Summicron f2. This a little gem of a lens, really compact and delivers very pleasing results.

You can find a mint version for approx. $500.00.

Moving up from there the new Summarits are all wonderful lenses as well, however at a higher price level.

thanks .. had the summarit 50 and 90 with the m8.2 i had earlier .. was thinking of keeping either the 35 or 50 so a 40 would be a bit to close to either of them . .. yes size wise smaller .. was thinking of selling the 50 f1.1 and replacing with a 50 -70 mm smaller lens .. guess budget would be 2K USD

What did you think of the Summarit? I had the 35mm Summarit and sold it when I got the 35mm Summilux. While I really like the Summilux, I must admit that I miss the Summarit's compactness and wonderful creamier rendering, less clinical than the Summilux.

Have a look at either a 50mm f2 Summicron, 50mm f2.5 Summarit,or the 50mm f2.8 Elmar. All good choices IMO.

In a new lens you might consider the Zeiss 50mm f2. Used there's the 50mm Summicron or even the CV 50mm 1.5 LTM ( which seem to be harder to find nowadays).

If you want a smaller 50, the 50 Summicron is small and wonderful and just within your budget. There is a rumor that Leica may be updating this lens soon, but a new version would likely cost more, while the old (current) version is quite good. The 50/2 has a beautiful, classic way of drawing, and depth of field is pretty shallow at f/2. It is a nice compromise between bigger and smaller lenses.

I bought a 35 Summarit to supplement my 35 Summilux FLE for exactly the reasons you mention. I'm very happy with it as a second 35mm lens both for it's more 'classic' rendering and colour reproduction, and its reduced size and weight.

As a lighter/smaller 50 to the Summilux ASPH I chose the ZM 1.5/50 C-Sonnar over the Summarit. It renders very differently to the Summilux but is lighter, shorter, cheaper and as fast.

FWIW, I did a review of the 50mm f/1,1 Nokton and also pitted it against three other lenses in a Lens Shoot-out (50mm). Long and short of it, it's a fast lens with decent performance for the money. Better at f/1,4 but definitely usable wide open. Stopped down it gets even better... Though it does have a slight focus shift from f/2,8-4 or so.

The 50 cron is compact and a great performer. I also think the 35 Summarit is very compact and takes great photos. Either is a great travel lens in my opinion. If you want some thing more vintage then try a old, collapsible 50 cron. It works great on the M9.
