Hello,

I was looking for an digital "M8"

And Somebody propose me the following deal :

My Leica M6 + Voigtlander 35 1.4 + A scanner Plustesk 7400 for his "M8" mint condition (as a new one) 2000 actuations (with complete box, paper etc...) + 1 extra Leica battery.

"He" try the digital but want to go back to film and me I'm tempting by the "M8" digital.

What do you think is it a good deal ?

Kind regards

Welcome to the forum.

I'll skip the film vs digital discussion; that value determination is up to you.

From a mere price standpoint, that merely requires some research on current prices. A good start is looking at the buy/sell section of the forum (click at top); most if not all of the gear you mention is, or has been, up for sale here. Many Leica dealers (available from the Leica site) also have web sites showing current prices of used gear. You will find some large variations, so it's worth taking time to do your homework.

Regarding the M8, one should determine if it has any upgrades; there are 3 possible...shutter, frame lines and/or sapphire screen. In the US, a base M8 without upgrades, even in mint condition, could be bought for under $2500. Prices of course rise from there depending on upgrades, with the M8.2 generally being most expensive.

I personally only buy from reputable Leica dealers who can provide warranty, and at a minimum will stand behind the purchase if there are any issues. I would do my research on prices, then find the right dealer. Your call.

Jeff

As noted above: Only You can decide.

Me: I'd do it. The 40 f1.4 will keep you with 'glass' and the film scanner and any film camera (even a leica) is a depreciating asset imho. Depreciating is also the watch word for any digital camera, but that is a whole 'nother can o worms!

The 35 f1.4 Voigtlander is easily replaced at relatively low capital expense, unlike ANY Summilux Thirty Five of ANY vintage.

I'd say the Cost/Benefit Ratio for such a transaction falls into your favor. If you ever do want another film M that ought to not be especially difficult to accomplish.

I suppose, you have read up on the pros and cons regarding the M8.

If you did and are still interested, you should RUN for this deal.

From an economical standpoint, it sounds a nice deal for the both of you.

If you are in love with color film @ 35mm though, you might miss something in the M8, you have with the M6.

I still use my M8.2 regularly next to a M9 or film and love it.

There are people though, who just don't like the M8.
